A fire drill at the library last week sent everyone out into the cold. There were three distinct topics of conversation to be made out amongst us evacuees. People wondered how long it was going to last. Others worried about the books they hadn’t been able to get out. And then there were those who regaled us with health complaints, primarily freshers’ flue, ‘I shouldn’t be here at all, let alone out in the cold!’ So for those of you feeling slightly worse for wear, here are a few tips to improve your health, so you can withstand any fire drill that comes your way.

1) Replace sugar with honey. Honey may contain more calories than sugar, but it also contains a lot more vitamins and minerals, as a quick google search reveals. And anyway, the department of health has revised its guidelines on daily calorie intake, allowing us all a few extra calories without the need for guilty feelings.

2) Skip the bus into town and walk instead. I know the bus is tempting, with no less than four stops along campus exits and colder weather coming along. A quick 20 minute walk into town though will save you money and count as exercise. It will be even better exercise on the way back if you’re carrying some shopping!

3) Make time for breakfast. Even if you have a 9:15, getting up in time to have breakfast will benefit your health. Researchers have found a link between people missing breakfast and leading a more unhealthy lifestyle than those who make time for the meal. Furthermore, skipping breakfast will encourage you to snack on sugary foods throughout the morning – not something any health guru would condone.

4) Don’t forget to relax. It’s not all about exercise and a healthy diet. Leave time to enjoy yourself. Take a break from the library and meet up with friends or indulge yourself with a night at Willow. A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body.

5) Eat an apple, not a vitamin C tablet. Vitamin supplements are necessary for some, but if you’re substituting a healthy diet with pills, it’s time to stop. Whereas an apple will provide you with vitamin C and anti-carcinogenic, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory chemicals, a vitamin C tablet will only provide you with the vitamin.
