York Food and Drink Festival 2010 Preview

Food Festival
York Food and Drink Festival 2010 is about to begin
Sunday, 12th September 2010
Over the next two weeks The Yorker will be following the events at this year’s Food and Drink festival in several special review pieces, interviews, and food and drink sampling from the scene.

The ten day festival, which runs from 17th to 26th of this month promises to be the biggest and best yet. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “This year, the Festival will run continuously throughout the morning, noon and evening bringing people of all ages into the city to celebrate the very best that Yorkshire has to offer.” He followed: “Visitors can get their taste buds around a wealth of fine foods and drinks as well as enjoying the vast array of impressive markets, chef demonstrations, guest speakers, tasting workshops and street entertainment.”

Festival Highlights

17th – Speed Nibbling (Free): Producers and suppliers of “good, clean and fair” food gather for taste testing at ‘The Fountain Cafe’ (a cafe situated at the fountain on Parliament Street for the duration of the festival). The event runs from 5pm – 9pm with debates led by several hosts at 7pm and is totally free.

18th – York Whiskey Lounge Festival 2010 (£15): Whiskey tasting at The Guildhall has 90 varieties to choose from, with masterclasses from industry experts running throughout the day from 12pm-9pm. The price tag may be somewhat hefty for a student, but it is a rare chance to consume alcohol without being branded a binging student, instead a refined character.

19th – Temujin – Kangaroo Stir-fry (Free): The birth name of Genghis Khan, Temujin, named this dish following his soldiers habit to cook this dish on their upturned shields within battles. The Mongolian BBQ is now very popular in its native country, plus its main ingredient is Kangaroo! This event will be held at 4pm at the demonstration area at St Sampson’s Square.

20th – Sausage and Ale Tasting (Free): – The Sausage Festival runs from the 20th through the 24th but to taste the 14 varieties of sausage and additional ale will set you back £6.95, so turn up to the Old White Swan on Goodramgate at 7.30pm-8.30pm to sample some free Ale and Sausages from the festival. It is guaranteed to be better than the £3 microwaved Bangers and Mash from The Charles.

21st – Demonstration with Claire Gallagher of Betty’s (Free): – The infamous Betty’s chocolate specialist will demonstrate her techniques of the new range of handmade chocolates which launched on Thursday. It will be held at the demonstration area from 2pm.

An Evening with Joanne Harris, Author of Chocolat (£5): – The author of the book turned Oscar nominated movie starring Johnny Depp will spend an evening at Explore York Library Learning Centre from 7pm.

22nd – Coffee, Tea and Chemisty: The Amazing Science in a Cuppa (£2): – The University of York’s very own Professor Paul Walton from the Chemistry department leads a lecture at 7.30pm at The Guildhall answering why coffee and tea tastes the way it does, the health benefits and what the cuppas actually consist of.

23rd – YorkshireVision Curry Contest (£15): – A night at The Guildhall includes a free York Beer, and of course, major curry sampling. The gathering at 7pm promises to be great fun for university students, with each table of food-lovers scoring the curries to present an overall winner.

24th – Honey Taste Workshop (£5.50): – from 4pm at Welton’s Too on Walmgate, Allan Stonehouse of Beez Neez Apiary (a farm specialising in honey and wax) will demonstrate the process of honey making and let you taste the difference between one honey and another.

25th – Afro Carribean Evening (Free): – from 5pm at The Fountain Café there will be an African drum and steel pan performance, with free Ghanaian Curry for all. If the curry is anything like my Cameroonian Aunt’s curry, it will be delicious. There also promises to be an interactive session where you can learn how to play the steel pans.

26th – Introduction to Fizz (£7.50): – Wine expert Karen Hardwick explores the complexity of champagne and other types of fizz at Melton’s Too, Walmgate at 1pm.
