First holiday without parents - Ibiza

Ibiza
The typical Ibiza holiday
Saturday, 26th February 2011
My first holiday without my parents started as a plan to go to Cornwall-we had just finished A level exams and myself and a friend had turned out minds to the rest of the summer, before we all headed off our separate ways to uni. A group of 6 of us had planned to go to Cornwall but we struggled to find a time when everyone was free, and by the time we got round to booking it, everywhere was booked up, and the train fares to get there were excruciatingly high at such late notice. So the holiday was off and I was majorly disappointed. I didn’t want to turn up at uni in two months time being the only one of my new friends who had never been on holiday without the parents- think of the embarrassment!

Next thing I know, the same friend phoned me with a different plan - she and two other friends had a holiday to Ibiza planned and one had dropped out, did I want to go instead? I jumped at the chance. Although I had been through school and sixth form with the other girl, I only knew her vaguely, but this didn’t stop me.

The worst part of the whole thing was asking my parents if I could go (yes, asking- even though I was 18, paying for it myself and off to uni in a couple of months, I still felt like I should ask rather than tell!) This was before the days of Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents and I think in my parent’s eyes, Ibiza was still very much the party Island that it was back in the 90s - M(Sh)agaluf and Ayia Napa were not yet on their radar! Fortunately my parents barely batted an eyelid (well my mum had just come back from two weeks in Spain herself, so she could hardly say no!)

The next few weeks were a whirlwind of exam results and celebration and soon we were off. Compared to most teenage holidays, we managed to avoid scandal. We only drank once in the whole week, cocktails down at the marina one night, and to be honest I think the strength of those cocktails was enough to deter us all for the rest of the week! Our wildest moment was coming back into the hotel after a night out at about 7am, passing families with young children on their way to breakfast just as we were on our way to bed, but hey, you can’t go to Ibiza and not sample the nightlife!

Whilst none of us did anything on this holiday to be ashamed of, or that we wouldn’t want our parents to have seen (except perhaps overspending on souvenirs!), I would still have been fuming had I found out afterwards that they had been watching us the whole time, in the manner of Sun, Sex and Suspicious parents. After all, your first holiday away is a chance to prove your independence and ability to cope alone, and a chance for your parents to prove that they trust you, which clearly they don’t if they are staying ten doors down in the same hotel!
