Music Society Concert Series - The Jack Lyons Concert Hall

musical notes
Thursday, 28th February 2008
York’s Music Society has had the excellent idea of staging twice weekly lunchtime recitals at the Jack Lyons Concert Hall. You turn up at 1pm, pay your measly £2 entrance fee (or £6 if you fancy joining the society) and then sit back and enjoy the music.

Tuesday’s ensemble consisted of David Bradley Williams on clarinet, brilliantly supported by Chloe Weiss and Peter Rocker on piano. Not at the same time of course, they took it in turns.

The first piece they played was Aaron Copland’s Excerpts from Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, a frenetic, dissonant piece which was not to my taste. However, there is no doubt that it was played with great skill, Bradley-Williams, negotiating the rhythmic and tempo changes with panache.

The next piece, Gerald Finzi’s Five Bagatelle’s for Clarinet and Piano was a delight, particularly the andante sections. A light and varied collection, it was the ideal matinee piece, the musical manifestation of pimms and lemonade on the lawn.

Between now and the end of term, all kinds of acts will be showcasing their talents including a hairy arsed jazz/funk band and a barbershop quartet. Not only is the music great, but these little recitals provide a much needed break from the rat race; a chance to relax and reflect before returning to the annoyance that is everyday life.

The concerts are held every Tuesday and Friday, 1pm, Jack Lyons Concert Hall.
