Essential Summer Term Gig Guide - The Junction

Spaghetti Junction
An actual junction
Saturday, 10th May 2008
Preview by Albert Testani

Second in our series of this term's highlights at York's music venues (you can see our recommendations for Fibbers here) Albert Testani runs you through what not to miss at the brilliantly intimate Junction...

14th May Black Diamond Heavies

While this Southern States band are paralleled with the White Strips' raw stripped down rock and roll sound, they also incorporate various blues, folk and jazz elements to create a sound that discovers itself somewhere between the Black Keys, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

28th May Sky Larkin

Leeds-based indie journeymen (and woman) Sky Larkin combine cracking female vocals inevitably compared to female-fronted 90s indie groups with bang up to date guitar interplay. Their latest EP includes covers of I Was A Teenage Hand Model by QOTSA and Because the Night by Patti Smith. This is a good opportunity to shout to hear those, and to check out the band before they play Great Escape and Latitude this summer.

12th June The Talks

With nice up beat ska sounds and solid rock choruses, The Talk are my choices for the sleeper hit of this term. This will be one of the shows where you discover a new band that you can really enjoy and brag to all about to all of your friends, until they get big and you don’t like them anymore.

15th June Anni Rossi

If you're in the mood for something totally different and don’t wish to see the typical gig with either a rock band or an acoustic artist, then check out Anni Rossi on the 15th June - she rocks out on the viola using both her virtuoso speed and synthesizer to create a sonic experience that definitely sounds like a highlight of the term at the Junction.

24th June Make Model

Make Model bring the fashionable electro-pop indie sound to the intimate setting of the Junction. One of the better known bands to grace the venue this term, this is sure to be a great show and provide a good sized crowd, so plan to be there early.
