Goodricke has slightly less talent...

Goodricke Talent
An Obsession-less Dan Hunter
Saturday, 31st May 2008
Day 2 of my venture into reviewing, and last night, my long-suffering housemate and I went to check out the talent in Goodricke (save the puns, we had all them all last night!)

After the belated start, during which we consumed a great deal of red wine, we settled down to Oli Warne, the charming gent who had warmed up Halifax the evening before.

He opened with Lazlo Bane's I'm no Superman and continued to a beautiful version of Handbags and Gladrags. Afterwards he told us: "I've played for RAG a few times, but am especially looking forward to Woodstock" and wanted to plug his weekly open-mic extravaganza in Vanbrugh, every Sunday (there you go Oli - done!).

Tonight's judges were Goodricke Chair, Joe Clarke, James Chair, Chet Khatu and Woodstock Co-ordinator, Billy Goldring.

Act 1

Then, the real contest began, when Beth Ridley, a Goodricke second year took to the mic with Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked.

Clarke said Ridley was "absolutely fabulous, diction was fabulous too. I'd love to see you on a bigger stage." Which is what our merry team of reviewers thought too, so that's all good. Goldring was full of praise and asked: "I wanna know why I haven't seen you on the Central Hall stage" with Khatu adding that it was "really soulful."

After her performance she said: "I think if I get through, the chance to perform will be amazing."

Act 2

After a drinks break (and more red wine) we met Dan Hunter, whose nimble fingers are normally backed by his band The Obsession played three songs, including an original titled Close your eyes.

Beth made it through to the final with Defying Gravity

Our verdict was that he was the most professional act we'd seen so far but the McQ's bar lost interest mid-way through, although Hunter said he'd prefer to have had his band-mates there.

Clarke took on the role of Simon Cowell ("without the trouser height" he was keen to inform) and said: "It feels like I've heard it before. As a solo, it sounded a bit samey." Goldring went to the other end of the scale and said: "I'll be a crowd pleaser, I'd probably put you through" whilst Khatu "went halfway" and added "you sound like the Stereophonics, but I'll still vote yes because I liked you."

Afterwards, Hunter said he wasn't "gutted" by Clarke's comments, but told us that if he did get through the other members of his band would be eloping from their respective Uni's around the country to join him.

Act 3

Next, Emma used her vocal chords for a bit of Evanescence and My Immortal. As soon as the intro kicked in we became a bit reluctant as to whether we wanted to be so near the speaker. It's a bloody hard song to sing.

Clarke agreed with us: "I think your nerves took over, there were a few pitch issues." Whislt Khatu said, "I like the song, I like the band, but you chose to sing a karaoke song, and that's what it sounded like."

Act 4

Next up was Sean, who chose to sing the classic, Hit me baby one more time with much of the direction aimed towards Helen Adams, RAG President and compare with a special extra section dedicated to Joe Clarke's lap.

Clarke told him: "You entertained the shit out of the people in here" whilst Khatu echoed both the profanity and message with: "You're a legend. I want your babies. You're a fucking legend." Whilst Goldring finished with: "Big D may have Chesney Hawkes, but we have the one and only."

Reviewers Choice

  • Oli Warne (although technically we can't)
  • Beth
  • Dan Hunter

Judges Choice

  • Beth
  • Dan (one voted for with his band, one without)

Overall, it was another great night, the atmosphere took a little longer to get going than in Halifax the night before, but two good, and different acts made it through to the final. So, Goodricke does have talent, maybe not as much as Halifax, but still. It entertained us no end.

Kate Wilson and Rachel Platt, two Goodricke ladies we got chatting to were full of praise for the event: "It's the best night of my life" said Platt, whilst Wilson added: "Goodricke is very talented!"

The next installment of 'York's got Talent' is Wednesday, in Wentworth where Chair Chet Khatu told us there will be plenty of talent on show from James College.
