Woodstock: 21/06/08

Woodstock
Thursday, 19th June 2008
Woodstock is coming, it is the outdoor event of the year, and one which always delivers amazing performances, huge amounts to charity, and general good times.

This year Woodstock sees the two stages host a variety of acts as well as alternative entertainment (in the form of Wiis) in the JCR.

RAG invites you to 12 hours of non-stop music and entertainment, featuring the best of campus talent spread across two stages.

The Headliners are a variety of student bands. Magic P and the Innuendos, Half A Dog, Low Flying Flag, Apply The Brakes and Make It Better Later.

Half a Dog said: "We absolutely cannot wait to play Woodstock! We were all there last time and hope we can help build a similar atmosphere. We are also big fans of some of the other bands so we are sure it will be an excellent day!"

"We have great new material just itching to be unleashed on the Woodstock crowd: along with our usual funky soul, a couple of stonking covers and some beatboxing."

They added: "If you haven't heard us before, get ready for some filthy funky bass grooves, tight horns and big blues breaks, all held together with the beautiful divaesque lead vocals of Julia Skiba."

Gaz Percival, from Low Flying Flag said that the band are looking forward to event, and that they've "invited a special guest along to join us for a few tunes. We'll also be indulging in some malignant narcissism. We just can't help ourselves."

He said that the audience should expect "epic riffage. It's one of the last gigs we're going to play as a band and certainly the biggest so we're pulling out all the stops."

The event will also see performances from Kid Gloves, Re:Impressions, Zamar Gospel Choir and Juliet Bravo

Variety is the spice of life, and as such DanceSoc, Dancesport, Gymnastics, JuggleSoc, Breakz, ComedySoc and Fusion will all also perform.

It will also see the culmination of York's Got Talent, where the groups who were chosen from their colleges will battle it out to be named the most talented person/group on campus.

Billy Goldring, Woodstock Co-ordinator said that "It's the biggest showcase of student talent in the whole year, for minimal money and even that's going to a good cause."

Summing the event up he said its "entertaining, unique, worthwhile and all-inclusive".

He warned people to arrive early: "The first five bands are really good, if you don't come early you'll miss out!"

Woodstock starts, 12pm, Saturday Week 9, All profits go to the RAG beneficiary charities. The event is funded by a suggested £3.50 donation on the door.

If any performers would like to 'practice' ahead of the big day, Alcuin will be hosting an Open Mic night tomorrow night in the grass outside B Henry's!
