Ke$ha - Animal

Ke$ha
Friday, 5th February 2010

2009 was truly the year of Gaga, but could 2010 really be the year of Ke$ha? With her debut album Animal entering the U.S. Billboard Charts directly at number one it looks like she may have a world domination plan of her very own. However, the question beckons as to whether this is a plan worth listening to.

At the age of 22, Ke$ha (actual name Kesha Sebert) has already paid her dues in the music business having worked with artists ranging from Britney Spears to Flo Rida (this also includes backing vocals for the ill-conceived album by Paris Hilton, but everyone makes mistakes). With writing credits already well in circulation for artists, it is actually quite a surprise that she has been working towards this for the last seven years. With all the success she’s been accumulating it is almost like a modern day fairytale.

The twist in the tale is the album itself whereby, considering all the years of planning, it is incredible how rushed Animal sounds. This may be cruel seeing as the opening four tracks are great examples of modern day pop with great production values and catchy hooks. Little is left to be said about ‘TiK ToK’ that hasn’t already been said; it’s a catchy single and deserved the high placing in the chart. Same would go for ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ and ‘Take It Off’, which both have hit single scrawled across them.

However, it is the other ten tracks that as a reviewer you can happily take umbrage with, as all the catchy hooks of the opening songs are immediately forgotten and replaced with bratty musings and insincere ballads. In fact the closest resemblance would be Taylor Swift deciding to wander aimlessly through the streets head-to-toe in body-glitter, having hit the bottle a bit too hard, and then screaming how gross it is that old men are hitting on her. This may sound like a strange image to concoct but it is a direct result of the song ‘D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R.’, where Ke$ha tries to emulate Avril Lavigne’s hit song ‘Girlfriend’ and fails miserably.

This is not meaning to say that this girl is untalented, under all the vocoder and Autotune it is clear that this girl actually has a pretty decent voice. Also, with writing credits on all her songs, as well as the great hit single ‘This Love’ by The Veronicas, you can rest assured that this girl probably has some form of game plan. The problem with her tactics is that she has decided to go directly into the slutty/empowering medial stage that all young starlets must go through so that they may emerge as respectable adults, the main flaw in the plan being that she never had a wholesome image to begin with that required shattering.

All things considered, there is a spark here which makes Kesha Sebert’s future career possibilities an interesting one to chart. She just needs to tighten her image, get a bit smarter with her songs, use less Autotune and we might actually have a future star.
