The week in music

Ke$ha2
Monday, 7th June 2010

The Yorker presents this week's succinct guide to goings-on of the musical variety, both locally and nationally. Here you'll find previews of a selection of single releases from the week ahead, as well as a guide to the hottest tickets in town for live music.

Gigs

Metal fans can happily spend their mid-week in Fibbers as the venue welcomes two of the scene's fast-rising groups, Dear Superstar on Tuesday 8th and Trigger The Bloodshed on Wednesday 9th. On Friday 11th, the stage then hosts Sheffield garage band Bromheads, a group formed by Tim Hampton and Dan Potter formerly of Bromheads Jacket.

If these gigs don't suit your musical tastes then head over to The Duchess on Tuesday 8th where John Power, former bassist in The La's and frontman of Cast, will be performing a solo acoustic set of songs from the latter of said bands. Then if you're in need of something completely different, Essex duo dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip will be performing their unique brand of hip hop electronica on Friday 11th.

Closer to home, the University Baroque Ensemble perform in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall on Wednesday 9th. The programme, entitled 'Agreeing to Disagree', features concertos by Corelli and Vivaldi. Following this, the University Jazz Orchestra will give their final concert of the year on Friday 11th; they will be joined by guests from the Julian Arguelles Octet for performances of jazz standards and big band classics.

Singles

Ke$ha – Your Love Is My Drug

With Ke$ha’s latest single ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ there is a general feeling that Avril Lavigne covered this musical ground extensively a few years ago. True, it has a catchy hook and is generally a quite decent pop track, but it is incredibly formulaic. Also, in answer to the opening line 'maybe I need some rehab, or maybe just need some sleep', the former may be preferable soon enough.

Gabriella Cilmi - Hearts Don't Lie

Fun to say, more fun to watch. This is Ellie Goulding with a pulse and a great voice, and hot... so this isn't Ellie Goulding. If there are only two top things to come out of Australia they are rugby players and pop princesses. Gabriella Cilmi is of the latter; having graduated into the charts with previous summer sensation Sweet About Me, Gabriella now acts and sounds like a true diva. The only problem with Gab is her inability to take the tweens, but anyone older than 12 (either mentally or physically) will secretly or publically love this song.

Rox – I Don’t Believe

Definitely catchy - in the same vein as the Noisettes and Janelle Monae – I like it, even if it does get a little repetitive. Powerful vocals and a tight backing to match, this is good radio-friendly pop. I’d like to see her be a bit more imaginative, but I still await the album with interest.
