Woodstock 2010 LIVE

Woodstock night
Saturday, 26th June 2010
Roses 2010

23:25 The Fringe DJ set has started in the Dining Hall, and our headliners Make It Better Later are about to take to the Main Stage, so the time has come to bid you farewell. As The Yorker's Second Annual RAG Woodstock Live Blog draws to a close, we leave you with some wise words, currently being yelled by the festival masses:

"ENG-ER-LAND! ENG-ER-LAND! ENG-ER-LAND, ENG-ER-LAND, NA-NA!"

Na-na, folks. Na-na.

Woodstock - flaming poi

23:09 Rich has discovered a significant mass of tomato beneath his rear. Bad choice of seating, man.

No photos of that, but here's the strobe:

Woodstock strobing

23:03 The Hung are now covering Jet. Lovely.

23:02 There's strobe lighting a-plenty here as we reach the climax of 'Killing In The Name'.

Brad feels that everything today, including his purchase of a burger, has gone to charity. With the exception of the can of Fosters he unwittingly stole from Rich...

22:57 And now it's time for the seemingly obligatory 'Killing in the Name' cover...

Woodstock night

22:49 All the pretty ladies around the world... are at Vanbrugh main stage right now.

22:44 And now Rich is having a wild time singing along to their cover of 'Don't Stop Me Now'. It's almost like he's in Brian May's hands right now.

Large not found

22:42 In the heat of passion for Woodstock, the Yorker team has relocated to Vanbrugh Paradise, and is watching penultimate Main Stage act The Hung covering Muse's 'Hysteria'. Muse are probably playing that very song right now at Glastonbury. Probably safe to say we're having a better time up here.

22:33 Pete is looking awkward.

22:32 Lucie has just identified herself in one of Pete's wonderful photos. Not that he was stalking her or anything...

22:31 Lucie has returned from 'outside'. We're informed that people have flaming poi (as demonstrated in Pete's wonderful photos) and that the Johnny P and the Howlie T Experience performed a medley of Cheryl Cole, Busted, Dizzee Rascal and R Kelly.

22:27 Johnny P and the Howlie T Experience just gave the crowd a live performance of O.M.G.! out on the Main Stage. Inside Holiday Inn and Seriously Uncool keep everyone warm.

Woodstock night

Woodstock night

22:25 Rich is just talking to Dave Sims who is playing with headliners Make It Better Later. He's psyched to be playing trombone in their set. Apparently there will be an electric violin too...

22:11 Pete just bumped into one of the organisers of last year's legendary Woodstock, Mike Thackray, in front of Johnny P and the Howlie T Experience. He's "glad to be back, and having a really good time being able to enjoy the day, instead of panicking the whole time".

Woodstock - Johnny P and the Howlie T Experience

Woodstock - Johnny P

Elsewhere, Brad reports that about five people are seriously headbanging to Seriously Uncool in Vanbrugh Hall.

The BBC are telling us to get into the Glastonbury Groove. Who needs that when we have Woodstock??

21:46 The man filling in between acts on the main stage announced his phone number to the assembled masses - the resulting messages included the almost too profound "I love initiations".

21:42 It seems that the music here in V-bar has been steadily getting louder throughout the day. Now Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' is blasting out...

And now there is disco-style lighting as well!

21:40 Passing the Yorker tables, "a leading academic" just proclaimed: "The Cess Allen Band are pretty good."

So there you have it.

21:38 Rich: Pete just led me to a DJ set claiming it was a live band. I was not impressed...

21:32 Hannah and Lois are about to depart. Hannah's been sitting here for 9 and a half hours, it's probably time. Have fun!

21:11 Says Lucie: Cess Allen Band, from London and now playing on the main stage, are looking for sponsors to get the bass player's chest waxed - they ain't half bad. In fact, out of all the bands so far, these are easily one of the best.

Cess Allen Band

20:54 For those of you that like Murray, he just beat Gilles Simon. Also USA and Ghana are 1-1.

20:42 Cheesy Pop Soc have just started off their set. Macarena anyone?

Woodstock cheesy pop

But some of us just need a nap.

Lucie takes a nap

20:33 Adam M-M has just returned from seeing a show (lucky for some). Read Tom Ellis' review here

Brad: "Haven't heard this in years - 'Movin' Too Fast' on the main stage."

20:29 The sun is down at Central Hall, which means the party is about to get started.

Sundown at Woodstock

Woodstock in evening

20:21 Lois has returned from watching Doctor Who. *CHEERS and WHOOPS*

Tent!

20:16 James College have just won the College Recycling competition, and will be winning keyrings. Hoorah for saving the Earth!

20:11 Pete is now proceeding to discuss his life. Rich tires of this, but is putting up with it because he has just managed to sell a Latitude ticket to him...

We've also just had an update from Brad; apparently there's been a shout out from the Main Stage to all the Peters of the world.

Apparently, Peter Marshall and the Lomos on the main stage are singing a song that wonders what would happen if Jesus had a blog. Lucie isn't convinced, yet people are still clapping along. They've also just shamelessly advertised their next gig and are now singing a song about an egg. Lucie says: "Maybe they're just really good and we're not drunk enough." Brad says: "It's like watching Blue Peter with swear words."

Large not found

19:54 They're back! So, let's hear what they've seen...

Josh Savage tried and failed to get us to sing along, although Rich was enjoying it. "HONK!", we sang. His cover of Coldplay's 'Yellow' had Pete feeling like he was being serenaded.

19:52 Still no news from the front line, but when everyone comes back I'm sure they'll have many interesting insights.

19:42 Mick Jagger and Bill Clinton are having a chat during the USA v. Ghana game. That's odd.

19:38 SambaSoc have really got rhythm!

Also, kudos to the people with the inflatable sofa. Wise.

19:29 And now Fiona's gone. So it's just Hannah. Nevermind, she's watching the tennis.

The SambaSoc does look good on the telly though, if only I could go outside...

19:27 SambaSoc are keeping the crowd warmed up outside. SAMBA!

19:26 Pete and Rich, and Brad, and Lucie, have left Hannah and Fiona all alone. They've gone to see someone who grew up in Paris, apparently.

19:24 Pete wants to know if Josh Savage is on yet. Maybe he's a fan...

19:23 Fiona thinks the atmosphere outside is really lovely. She's not wrong!

19:14 Pete and Rich are just back from the main stage to stock up on supplies having been listening to the start of Imogen Dow's set. Her mellow lyricism has been enjoyable thus far!

Woodstock

19:06 Saucy Jack and the Blue Moons have just finished their set in the hall with 'Sweet Home Alabama'.

For anyone interested in all the sporting happenings, Nadal went through but had to go the distance of 5 sets. Murray's just warming up. The Williams sisters have won their doubles match. And the footy's on in half an hour.

18:50 Still nothing happening on the main stage.

Guys in dining hall are covering Johnny B. Goode.

First year English student says: "Highlight so far has been the RAG team singing 'My Way'. Has been a bit quiet so far, but really fun sitting in the sun, and I'm looking forward to the acts later on tonight."

18:46 And now Bobby Charlton is stood up to applaud Nadal on Centre Court, over at Vanbrugh York students laze in the late afternoon sunshine

18:40 They're having a few technical difficulties on the main stage. But fear not, RAG are selling t-shirts at Vanbrugh Paradise!

18:36 Hannah's getting very excited by the tennis!

18:34 Rich: Nom nom nom.

18:21 Someone in the hall is covering 'Whole Lotta Love'... unless it is Led Zep themselves...

18:16 YGT winners P.O.P. are covering 'Killing in the Name' on the main stage. Bangin'.

18:10 The Yorker's Woodstock liveblogging team! Minus Lois, Steph and Adam, who left earlier but did a brilliant job!

Yorker team Woodstock 2010

18:05 Contemplating getting a burger... How much is this going to set me back I wonder?

18:02 There's a large crowd in the Dining Hall for DanceSoc, with a medley including 'Surfin' USA', 'Tragedy' and 'Rock Around the Clock'. Stunning set, crowned with a street number - soulful music and dancing to match.

Woodstock - DanceSoc

17:50 Dance Soc are currently wowing a packed Vanbrugh hall.

17:34 Rich has returned! We've missed him, haven't you?

Lucie reports: There's a little crowd gathered in front of the main stage, which is nice.

17:31 YSTV are doing a sterling job with their coverage of the day.

Watch it live here.

17:26 Lucie (below, right) reports that the latest band on the Main Stage have finished performing 'Surf's Up', a song made up entirely of bad euphemisms.

After being seen off stage, our Main Stage host is telling jokes about meeting Asians in bars. Allegedly, all the good looking ones are called Asif.

17:11 Adam reports that the runner-up of York's Got Talent is in Vanbrugh Hall with his impressive diabolo act.

17:08 In contrast to the hustle and bustle of Vanbrugh Paradise, it's relaxed and chilled out in the JCR, where Laurence Hobden is making his way through an acoustic set.

17:02 Our new Arts and Literature editor Lizzy just popped by for a moment. She informed us that she'd seen some people playing trumpets.

16:50 Reports coming in that the Brass Band are closing with a piece from the Yorkshire-based film Brassed Off.

16:46 It's 24 degrees outside and almost double that in Vanbrugh Hall. This is true festival weather

16:44 Lois just saw two small children trying to throw 20ps to win free sambuca shots. Really.

16:41 The University of York Brass Band played The Incredibles theme tune.

York Brass Band

16:26 York's Got Talent winners P.O.P., from Halifax, are up next on the main stage in their dresses. No nakedness then.

Events are about to commence in the JCR. York's Got Talent 3rd placers are first to perform.

16:22 York Hornets, our cheerleading squad are performing in Vanbrugh Dining Hall. They won their event at the BCA Midlands Regional in April.

Spongeing Sabbs

16:05 FUSION did a mash up of Destiny's Child, Ghostbusters and Pirates of the Caribbean.

DanceSoc

The spongeing of the YUSU Sabbs is starting outside!

16:01 This year's cast of FUSION gave a rendition of the 'Modern Ball' sequence moments ago in Vanbrugh Hall. Whilst certainly not as slick as the actual Central Hall performance, was certainly worth a watch. A stylish performance.

15:56 There's a beatboxer on the main stage doing cool stuff with a loop pedal.

15:51 York's Got Talent raised £283.53. Apparently over £200 of that was Halifax.

15:48 The University of York Brass Band will be playing 'Cry Me A River' by Michael Buble, and the Incredibles theme tune at 4:30 on the main stage.

15:47 The Rammers just did a rocking version of 'Sexy Chick'.

15:44 York Got Talent: 2nd place were Goodricke, 3rd place Derwent.

15:40 Diego Snail are still playing the Main Stage. Lucie thinks they're quite good but the crowd seems to be losing interest. Fairly crazy time signatures.

15:37 Adam M-M, our former Performing Arts Editor, recommends the FUSION show. He chose the music.

15:34 We also have intrepid reporters Steph, our Deputy Operational Director, and Adam our former Games Editor, who have returned to tell us that JuggleSoc are giving free demonstrations. Get down there!

15:32 Brad reports: "possibly the best electric violin solo ever?"

15:30 Re: 1346. Newly retired former Arts Editor Pete is here and is working on those photos. Also, he is talking about himself in the third person. Good afternoon, everyone - lovely day for it!

15:26 A man is covering Radiohead's 'Karma Police' in Vanbrugh dining hall. Probably not as good as the real deal at Glastonbury yesterday.

15:24 Sad news... or not, we think the Halifax winners of York's Got Talent will now be wearing dresses after being told to put some clothes on.

15:23 RESULT: Halifax win York's Got Talent! They'll be performing on the main stage at 6:15pm. Get ready for more nakedness.

15:21 Also Nightline has a stall here, go and support them!

15:16 There are plenty of RAG stalls around today, with prizes to be won! Go check them out at Vanbrugh Paradise.

15:15 Some guy has the "coolest electric violin" Lucie's ever seen.

15:14 This is as many guys as I've seen in Vanbrugh Common Room all day! DanceSport do 'Mas Que Nada'.

15:12 DanceSport in Vanbrugh Hall at 3pm. Very colourful costumes. Impressive performances, especially from Luke Malkin, Emily Seargant, Richard Parker and Harriet Waghorn.

15:11 Here we can bring you the line up of York's Got Talent's finalists:
Halifax - Max Khan, Dom Charters, Martin Sharpe and Jack Stanley make up P.O.P. (i.e., the thong guys)
Goodricke - Zack Turner on the diabolo
Langwith - Luke on guitar
Derwent - Dan Creahan aka MC Grizzle
Alcuin - Poubelle Booms
James - Tim
And we're still not sure on Vanbrugh, but they played Kings of Leon on guitar.

15:08 Halifax guys in thongs thrown out by doorsafe!!!

15:05 The quest to find out the names of the York's Got Talent finalists continues...

15:00 This is more like it: The Rising Hours amp up as the temperature hits over 25 degrees.

14:55 Hannah and Brad have gone off exploring, and Lois has been left alone in charge of the laptop. This cannot end well.

14:51 Brad has returned.....

14:47 Hoorah! Lois has arrived! *waves to Lois*

14:45 There's a half hour break before the winner of York Got Talent is announced. Hold your breath!

14:39 Loud cheers for the acoustic 'Billie Jean' cover in Vanbrugh dining hall.

14:34 Rich is about to leave us, *sobs*, but never fear, Hannah and Brad are still here to keep you up to date with what's going on.

14:26 Strong entry from James College in the York's Got Talent Finale. Acoustic guitar always a winner.

14:26 ... And supporting The Hung is another four-piece alt/pop group The Johnny P and Howlie T Experience in whose set we can apparently 'expect hilarity, sweet covers and possible nudity!'. Lovely...

14:24 Supporting Make It Better Later are four-piece The Hung who's drummer John is apparently a Vanbrugh graduate and last played Woodstock in 1997 as the lead guitarist in the band Whoever.

14:21 If you are unaware of tonight's headliners, fear not, we're here to inform! Last on tonight, at 11:30pm on the main stage, are festival veterans Make It Better Later, who were here way back in 2007.

14:16 It's sunny outside. It's not inside. We shall remain pasty pale. Well, Hannah will because she doesn't tan. Rich was tanned before he came.

14:12 Meanwhile the York's Got Talent Finale is underway in Vanbrugh Hall with some extremely impressive diabalo-ing!

14:12 Hannah just had a good idea. Be proud of her.

14:08 Zamar Gospel Choir on the main stage. Their sound perfectly accompanies the sunny weather. They have a small but appreciative audience at Vanbrugh Paradise.

Large not found

14:06 Hannah has ventured out into Woodstock... Brave of her. Still better than staying here where the only thing to be heard is the Ting Tings.

14:00 He's taken pictures of both the ceiling and the floor! Fascinating. An insight into Brad's mind here...

13:58 Brad returns from Vanbrugh Hall where the York's Got Talent finalists are still going. Apparently they played Kings of Leon - "People like Kings of Leon", says Brad.

13:57 We hear a cheer. Something must have been good.

13:55 Neither Rich nor Hannah know what they want to do with their lives. That's how thrilling this festival is so far.

13:50 We've just seen a guy an 'I Love Eurovision' t-shirt. We're surprised he hasn't asked The Yorker's Rich Powell for an autograph.

13:46 Phew! Thought we'd lost the article for a moment there. We will definitely not be trying to put in photos again until Pete shows up. He'll know what to do.

13:45 Oh no not again...

13:44 A band is currently covering Rage Against The Machine in Vanbrugh Hall wearing nothing but thongs. That's left me lost for words...

Large not found

13:40 Have just seen Spiderman.

13:40 Brad reports back: Vilde Renman was "cheery" i.e. very slow... in a good way....

13:36 Apparently singer-songwriter Vilde Renman has just taken to the mainstage. Brad has gone in search of more photos that we can't put in the article...

13:33 As you can probably see, we're struggling to work all the lovely photos we have into the liveblog. We will sort it one day soon! In the meantime we'll have to relay everything to you through the medium of the written word.

13:33 We can hear Snow Patrol playing somewhere. Somehow I don't think that's live music.

13:26

Pole Dancing Soc

13:20 Brad has returned from the main stage armed with photos of the brass band currently playing!

13:09 An organiser is trying to shepherd some face-painted rockers towards the stage and they're not listening. Reminds me of 'Almost Famous'

13:07 On the way back from watching some jazz on the main stage I've just seen two very indignant bouncers confiscate bottles of wine from some very drunk and confused looking performers complete with stage make-up and guitars.

13:06 The pounding drums of York Samba have just finished outside the entrance to Vanbrugh led by Sarah Morpurgo.

Rich at Woodstock!
Our esteemed Deputy Arts Editor Rich

12:46 Well we're slowly getting the hang of this Liveblogging lark. Hopefully soon we'll actually be able to start telling you about Woodstock!

12:42 Rich and I should not be left in charge of liveblogs.

12:40 Hooray, they're back again! Technical issues resolved... for now at least.

12:39 Help! Where did my words go?

12:37 Just caught the end of a number from the Return To The Forbidden Planet team with Tom Jones (no, not THE Tom Jones...) belting out a solo. Great stuff!

12:30 And Hannah has just revealed she has a bizarre crush on Chris Hoy. Wait, what does he know about tennis?

12:29 The sound of Forbidden Planet rehearsals is making it difficult for Hannah to listen to the tennis on iPlayer.

12:27 Hi everyone, welcome to Woodstock 2010! The Yorker will be here all day to bring you all the news of this year's festival. Starting you off is Hannah, our now ex-Deputy Arts Editor, and the man who's just filled her small shoes, Rich.
