Kissy Sell Out - Fibbers - 8/11/10

Kissy Sell Out
Friday, 12th November 2010
Determined to beat any crowds and eager to prove I’m a half-competent reviewer I turned up at Fibbers around 11.00, to be greeted by an overwhelming five people in the venue. Skip forward two hours, two drinks and too much time kicking my heels in York’s bars, I returned to a crush of people and high velocity electro – perfect.

The last date and latest addition to his San City High Tour, (Kissy Sell Out’s own record label for upcoming artists) the DJ seemed determined to finish on a high. Stripped of the artwork and visuals promised for previous gigs, the focus was solely on Kissy’s mixes which thankfully rose to the challenge. Packed with Kissy’s high octane and eccentric style, the music flipped rapidly from song to song, a particular highlight being the re-working of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Dance Yrself Clean’. With the majority of the set being high tempo, the occasional drop into quirky, almost country tunes could have been a welcome change of pace. However instead it detracted from the insistent energy the music had built up, the crowd becoming momentarily restless.

Kissy is anything but a static DJ, energetic as his music he skittered from deck to deck through the night, pausing only to stir up the crowd, with raised arms or a sudden jolt of electronic music. The sheer liveliness for the whole set was infectious, from almost being on the point of crashing out on a bar sofa, I was slapped fully awake and welcomed to the Kissy Klub.
