Singles Club

Nicki Minaj
Thursday, 24th March 2011
The Singles Club has returned! Here you'll find reviews of the latest single releases, from local talent to international breakthroughs.

Nicki Minaj feat. Drake - Moment 4 Life

I would imagine Minaj has to have a splash zone when she performs this single live, if the emphasis she applies to the letter ‘p’ is anything to go by. Nicki is the new first lady of R&B, and her rapping confirms this, showing up Drake whose presence is pretty much redundant. The song falls down on Nicki’s sudden switch to singing for the chorus, which isn’t strong enough, in terms of melody or her voice. Good summer song, easily forgettable but confirms that Minaj is one to watch. - Jane Catterall

Roger Sanchez and Far East Movement feat. Kanobby - 2gether

So Roger Sanchez is back, but wait, don’t get out the balloons just yet, for his big comeback is terrible. Both Roger and FEM have released far better tracks so my advice would be to give this song a miss and let it be swept under the proverbial rug. Also, if you’re wondering, the main sample of this song is Loveshack, an infinitely better song to listen to. You’ll probably end up dancing to this in Tokyo, and if that happens, it’s ok to lay the blame squarely on the alcohol and move on. - Jane Catterall

Eliza Doolittle - Mr Medicine

A chilled tune from the London songstress, easily listenable and easily forgettable. One for your summer playlists that you won’t actually remember by the time summer comes around, so actually pretty pointless. It’s a decent enough song, but it’s standard and generic and is distinctly unmemorable. Not a patch on earlier hit ‘Pack Up’. - Lucie Vincer

Rihanna - S&M

The lyrics of Rihanna's newest single "S&M" leaves very little to the imagination as she belts out lines such as "sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me". Images of her strutting around stage, confessing at great decibel heights about what she enjoys in the bedroom seem to be more a defence, rather than an expression, of her sexuality. - Alison Todd

Mike Posner - Please Don't Go

Mike Posner sort of feels like if Bruno Mars were attacked with a drum machine (if only) and at times, he ascends into a pitch only dogs can hear but, all that aside, this is catchy and I like it, actually quite a lot which is worrying. This song feels like a mash up of Super Mario Brothers and a ten year old girl singing into her hairbrush but if you give it a listen, or five, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself singing along (probably in a voice high enough to crack windows) and you might just like it. This song does however leave you with one burning question: just where did I put my Gameboy? - Jane Catterall

Panic! At The Disco: The Ballad Of Mona Lisa

Emos everywhere may actually have to crack a smile as Panic! resume to their normal angsty-tempo selves who first surfaced in their sell-out heyday of '05. In 2008 they briefly interrupted their popularity with the fittingly titled breakaway album "pretty.odd" . However, this latest single from the punk-cabaret band will no doubt secure them the annoying domination of Radio 1 for the next few months. - Alison Todd

Madcon feat. Maad*Moiselle - Outrun The Sun

In under a month this song will have been so over played in every club in town I can guarantee you’ll be sick of it. It’s boring, repetitive, unimaginative and completely uninspired, like much of this genre. Will most likely go the way of the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling’. Still like that one? Thought not. - Lucie Vincer
