The Singles Club: Week 6

Guitar music
Tuesday, 13th November 2007
Here in this week's rendition of The Singles Club you can impress all of your friends with all the bands that you heard about before everyone else. Then you can say that you didn't actually like them once they got big in the public eye... or you can just check out some really good new music.

One Night Only – You and Me

If Ben Folds went through a phase where he really liked Hellogoodbye and then went into a phase where he though his music should have a bit of cabaret-style influence, then you would most likely get One Night Only’s single You and Me. This incredibly catchy and quirky indie band releases one of the most promising tracks for this week. With solid choruses that have you humming along after just half of the song has gone by, you know that this is a band that you will enjoy listening to over and over.

Paul McCartney - Ever Present Past

In McCartney’s latest single, he blends a type of electronic pop with the old Beatles sound that everyone has come to know and love. The song is nice and basic, like much of McCartney’s solo work. Ever Present Past has a nice uplifting and pop feel to it. On the whole, nothing different from what McCartney has been putting out, but then again, is that really a bad thing?

Lou Reed jolts The Killers back to the Top

The Killers featuring Lou Reed - Tranquilize

In many ways it is impossible to create a bad song when you have the legendary artist Lou Reed working on your single, and this case is no different. Here The Killers create a really good single that has a chorus that will stick with you for days. However, do not expect a single like that of Mr. Brightside. This track has obvious Velvet Underground influences and gives The Killers a much-needed jolt in the music scene.

Super Furry Animals - Run Away With mellow and airy vocals mixed with an interestingly distorted guitar and bass line, the Super Furry Animals single Run Away provides a solid three minutes of shoegaze-style rock. The single feels more like a pure alternative track, but has a sound that resembles an indie-pop song just catchy enough to keep you wanting more and more.

The Latest from Bloc Party

Bloc Party – Flux

Anytime Bloc Party releases something, whether it is an album, a single, or anything involving their music, people get excited. Bloc Party fans immediately remember that first time they listened to Silent Alarm and here Bloc Party again falls short of living up to the fame of their debut. Flux is a more techno-based track that feels very promising for the first minute, but then repeats the same lines and beats over and over leaving you wanting more in the end.

Alicia Keys - No One

Alicia Keys made it alright for guys to like piano ballads when her first album was released over four years ago. Her obvious vocal and musical talents gave her an edge over almost any R&B artist. However, here her piano playing takes a back seat to a bass beat and a synthesizer. The presence of these stereotypical hip-hop staples overpower her playing and treat the piano parts as secondary, which greatly brings down the quality of this song. Here Alicia should have reversed the emphasis and stuck to her roots, which everyone recognized as different and edgy.
