Ziggy's under threat from council

Ziggys
Ziggy's to stay open
Tuesday, 19th January 2010
The outcome of a hearing for Ziggy's has been announced by the council.

The owner Andrew Elliott appeared before council chiefs in the Guildhall on Monday, who had to decide whether to revoke or suspend their license for three months, remove the club's manager, exclude a licensable activity from the licence, or modify its conditions.

However, it has now been agreed that the nightclub will have ten conditions added to its license which means the installation of noise limiting equipment on the sound system in the basement and regular noise patrols on the outside of the building by staff.

Nine noise complaints were investigated by the council last year, with an assessment by the council's night time noise patrol team confirming that noise levels were above the legal limit in nearby residences.

A report to the council also detailed the inadequate and unsafe crowd control measures used by the door staff, with people apparently being pushed out in the road, or sustaining minor injuries. However ten galvanised steel crowd control barriers have since been purchased by Ziggy's to prevent this from happening.

Students expressed their concern at the possibility of Ziggy's not being open as normal, with one student commenting that it would be 'very disappointing' if Ziggy's had to shut, joking that it being 'devoid of morals means it is the only place to go for sports socials'.

No doubt many students are glad that the outcome of this hearing has not prevented them from enjoying their Wednesday nights out in Ziggy's.
