A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Worldwide, people have tried to raise money to offer a first relief to the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Including the inevitable re-recording of Band Aid. Also in York several events were held.
The Matt Postle Quartet played an afternoon gig, named ‘Jazz for Haiti,’ last Thursday in the Courtyard. Tom Fitz-Hugh says, ‘I’m sure they won’t say this, but they were pretty damn good!’ With a combination of chilled afternoon jazz and some more Bossa-Hispanic influence, they raised about £280 in a few hours. The organisers, Matt Postle and Dave Smyth, will donate this to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal. There will be a gig by York resident jazz musicians, the resident bands of the Black Swan, the Phoenix and the Old White Swan, next Monday 8 February, for which the donations will also go towards the DEC appeal. On Sunday 31 January, Christ Etheridge, George Papadofragakis, David Levene and Jason Rose organised a walk for Haiti, quite like last year’s walk for Gaza. They were joined by 28 others, and ‘the majority of us completed a 28 mile trek to Selby and back, totalling over 12 hours of arduous walking,’ Rose said. They have currently raised almost £2,400 for the Mercy Corps Haiti Earthquake fund. [2]
Not only York students, but also two of their most popular hangouts, the Evil Eye Lounge and Ziggy’s, organised events. The Evil Eye has donated all the bar-proceedings of Wednesday 20 January. If you’re not too tired after Wednesday night in the big Z, then you should definitely check out Ink in the Hub (which is actually the Ziggy’s basement). Contrary to the Wednesday night cheese, there should be some awesome electronic music on. All donations will go to Oxfam. [3]
Although the earthquake has destroyed Port-au-Prince already almost a month ago, the disaster will not be over for a long time. It is not only vital to give first aid, we should also keep the Haitians in mind. Maybe this crisis will shake the world enough to help Haiti build a working state, a country in which people can live safely.
