Jack Sparrow… swashbuckling to a landmark near you?

pirates
Tuesday, 27th April 2010
Written by Grace Redhead

Captain Jack Sparrow is facing the toughest challenge of his buccaneering career, battling his way from Juicy Moosey to Fenton’s Coffee Lounge up York’s most celebrated thoroughfare.

The Shambles, recently named Britain’s most picturesque street, along with Petergate is being considered as locations for the fourth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. The proposed scene is reportedly more action than repartee and, according to the film’s location manager Michael Harm, will feature “Jack Sparrow and a lot of soldiers – very little dialogue and a lot of running and fighting.”

It is not certain if Johnny Depp or a stunt double will be striding York’s fabled lanes for the action-packed sequence. The decision will be taken closer to the filming date which has been scheduled for 6th September – before the university reconvenes for the new academic term.

Shooting on the film, entitled ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides’, starts in Hawaii and the production is also slated to shoot in Cornwall, more traditional pirate territory. York faces competition from London, with locations such as Greenwich Naval College also being considered for the scene. Pieces of eight come into the equation for the blockbuster’s production team: “We look for three things in a location,” said Harm, “practicality for filming, suitability for the scene and affordability.”

“We always reimburse shops for any revenue lost and if they are expensive and profitable then the price goes up. The studio could probably afford it, but even so it’s a concern.”

Businesses in the Shambles were made aware of the proposal by Blackbeard Productions Ltd. before Easter and were on the whole supportive. They would be closed during the filming period, which is predicted to take approximately a week.

The film, which centres around Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbarossa’s quest for the Fountain of Youth, is being produced by the prolific Jerry Bruckheimer, whose best-known films include ‘Black Hawk Down’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’. The film is being helmed by the Oscar-nominated director and choreographer Rob Marshall. It is the first in the series not to feature Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, as well as other favourite regulars Mackenzie Crook and Jack Davenport. Newcomers to the series include Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as his daughter, respectively Sparrow’s nemesis and love interest.

If Johnny Depp fails to show, York’s females can find a surprisingly convincing substitute in local Jack Sparrow lookalike Steven Perry, currently hired out by the Yorkshire-based artistes’ agency ‘Hullywood’.

Other dramas recently shot in York include a TV mini-series of Robinson Crusoe starring Sheffield-born actor Sean Bean.
