Take Back Parliament campaigns for electoral reform

Parliament
Sunday, 9th May 2010
British citizens have banded together to rally for political reform, in light of this year’s General Elections.

The recent elections gave rise to the country’s first hung parliament since 1974, saw voters turned away and postal votes lost. As a result, dissatisfied citizens have called Britain’s voting system a “broken” one. They have gone so far as to not only criticise the electoral system, but also to call it “undemocratic” and to compare it to the “Afghanistan elections”.

On May 6 itself, a campaign was formed among organisations from across the political spectrum, aptly named “Take Back Parliament” to fight the election results and to demand for voting reform. These organisations include Power 2010, the Social Liberal Reform and also the National Union of Students (NUS).

The first protest under this campaign took place in Trafalgar Square, London on May 8. According to the police, at least 2000 protestors dressed in purple to represent "democracy" rallied for fair votes and voting reform.

The protestors spiritedly chanted “Equal Votes Now” and demanded to “speak to Nick”, while asking the Lib Dems to “not sell out” on the electoral reform.

When Nick Clegg addressed the already roaring crowd, cheers and extra chanting erupted from the protestors. Throughout his speech, he was interrupted by shouts from the crowd saying, “Don’t sell out!”

Although Clegg did not offer any specific promises on the issue, only saying that a “statement” on it would be released later, he commended the movement, calling it “absolutely wonderful”.

He also claimed, “reforming politics is one of the reasons I went into politics”. Before ending his speech, Clegg urged the protestors to continue their campaign “in every street, in every community all over the country” for a “different, better, new politics”, much to the crowd’s support.

Watch the video below for a taste of what happened in London on May 8.

Although the “hung parliament” result has been disappointing for most and disconcerting for the future of this nation, its has fueled a previously somewhat apathetic society with a genuine interest in its country’s politics, and a real call for democracy.

In just over 2 days, 34, 399 people have signed a petition under the Take Back Parliament campaign to demand an electoral reform.
