With both on and off-campus accommodation potentially insufficient for rising student numbers, students at the University of York could be faced with increasing difficulties when it comes to finding a place to live.
Figures obtained from the University by Osbaldwick Parish Council have revealed that the number of students attending the University each year has grown at a greater rate than the accommodation provision on campus.
The figures show that while in 1999/2000, 8,325 students were served by 3,100 bed spaces on campus, this number had only increased to 4,679 by 2009/10. The student body, in contrast, has grown to 13,908.
One second-year student has expressed concern at this disproportionate growth, especially given the “expensive expansion” on the Heslington East campus that will apparently provide no more than 3,300 extra beds. The student population is estimated to rise by significantly more, a figure closer to 5,400.
Off-campus, planning permission for shared housing has been denied in three popular student areas. Local residents had objected to the plans, and the resulting obstacle to further potential student lets will damage the off-campus provision of student housing.
The University has answered the claims of the housing crisis by explaining that many of its students have no need to ever live on campus, due to their status as local residents or distance learners.
These figures have shown that the University relies heavily on off-campus accommodation, while these recent failed applications for shared housing expansions reveal that it should not rely on accommodation it cannot control the provision of. Both factors may give students at York problems in the future.
