A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The facilities, to be called York Sports Village, will include a competition-standard 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool, 100 station gym, a full-size 3G astroturf pitch and three five-a-side pitches. Second phase developments feature grass pitches, floor spaces for Spinning and Yoga classes, a sauna and steam room, three specialist treatment rooms and a café.
The complex will be open to University students and staff and the public. Situated next to Grimston Bar Park and Ride and several bus routes, the Sports Village will be easily accessible. The fitness facilities will run on a monthly membership scheme but the swimming pool will be available on a pay-as-you go basis, with discounts for regular users and YorkCard holders.
Funding for the York Sports Village will comprise of £5 million from the University of York, £3 million from the City of York Council and £1 million from sporting grants, such as Sport England.
Professor Brain Cantor, the University of York’s vice-chancellor, said: “York Sports Village will add significantly to the excellent sports and recreational facilities that we already provide for students, staff and the community.” The university currently boasts a gym with squash, badminton and tennis courts, an athletics track and both grass and astroturf pitches but has never had a swimming pool in its 47 years.
The University of York will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of the facilities and will maintain operational control for 25 years, which could be extended to 50 years. The complex is expected to create 30 full and part-time jobs.
Speaking to The Yorker, University of York Sport President Sam Asfahani said the Sports Village is "a much needed investment for a university of our calibre." "It will not only benefit students by widening the activities that they are now able to do, but also by alleviating the facility pressures we currently face on BUCS Wednesdays" he added.
A decision from the City of York Council’s Planning Committee is expected early in the New Year. If approved, work is scheduled to start in spring 2011 and by completed by July 2012.
