Jon Wong: court case verdict

Jonathan Wong
Jonathan Wong
Monday, 20th December 2010
This morning Jonathan Wong’s crown court case reached a decision and he has received a 2 year suspended sentence.

Wong was sentenced to 6 months for each charge, which were to run concurrently. He will not face any actual jail time after pleading guilty to 17 charges of making child pornography between July 15, 2008 and March 19, 2009. If he is caught committing these types of crimes again under his suspension he will most likely receive jail time. He also received 8 month supervision order and is registered on the sex offenders list for the next 7 years.

Wong, a Singaporean Ministry of Education (MOE) teaching scholar who had worked in secondary schools in Singapore has also been disqualified from working with children.

With regards to Wong’s charges the University of York told The Yorker ‘It is a matter of great regret that a member of the University has been convicted of these criminal offences. Jonathan Wong has been suspended since his plea of Guilty at his initial appearance before York Magistrates. On the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor, University Council has permanently excluded Jonathan Wong on grounds of gross misconduct.’

"was sentenced to 6 months for each charge" - "pleading guilty to 17 charges" - no jailtime. Not sure I understand each bit of the article correctly.

Seems very lenient indeed - but all of that is less concerning than the fact he worked in secondary schools. Not good.

It's nice to see a bit of journalistic integrity in this case, rather than the shitrag "FOREIGN PAEDOPHILE INVADES STUDENT BODY THROUGH EVIL LIES" approach which some other campus media outlets have taken.
