York “bomb threat” package harmless

Micklegate Landscape
Wednesday, 9th February 2011
The North Yorkshire Police have released a statement informing the public, “The package found at Aviva PLC this morning did not pose a danger to the public.”

The police are currently working with Aviva to establish the origins of the package.

North Yorkshire Police Media and PR Officer Adam Love said: “Police understand that a lot of disruption was caused in the city this morning, however officers responded to a call made in good faith and we have a duty to take every precaution in circumstances such as these.”

A suspicious package was found in the post room of Aviva PLC on Rougier Street at approximately 7.20am today. A cordon was put in place around the building, members of staff were evacuated and Rougier Street and Station Road were closed to traffic and pedestrians.

The cordon was removed and traffic returned to normal at around 9.55am after the army bomb disposal unit dealt with the suspicious package.
