Ziggy’s fire alarm set off by suspected smoke bomb

Smoke scare in Ziggy's
Thursday, 24th February 2011
The fire alarm at Ziggy’s was set off at about 12.30 am during tonight’s usual Wednesday night out, causing everyone in the club to evacuate the building.

According to the Yorker reporter Harriet Jean Evans, who was at the scene, “Rumour is, someone set off a smoke bomb.”

Two fire engines, police and ambulance arrived at the scene promptly at 12.41 am.

Evans was on the club’s basement floor at the time of evacuation. She said, “We were freaked out… it smelt well smoky!”

According to Evans, “Most people have moved on to Willow.” Ziggy’s is rumoured to have shut for the night, along with the belongings, such as wallets and coats, of many of the club's patrons.

Sarah Woodcock, Communications officer for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service has now confirmed "that the smoke had been caused by a pyrotechnic smoke grenade being set off."

Woodcock went on to tell the yorker "The call stated that there was smoke in the basement. Two fire engines from York were mobilised to the scene. On arrival fire-fighters found that there was no fire."
