A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
YUSU held a silent auction of a Black Card, which saw bids emailed in and the highest received by the deadline won. A Black Card gives the holder and a friend a queue jump and free entry into all official YUSU club nights.
Nick Scarlett, who helped to organise the auction, told The Yorker “I can't say what the top bid is but it's a lot more than £50.” He added that the auction was YUSU’s first big fundraising effort for Japan and more will follow as there are plans for a karaoke fundraiser in Edge alongside the GSA in Week One of next term.
A ‘York for Japan’ page has been set up on the YUSU RAG charity giving page, where students can donate money. Currently, over £1,900 has been raised and donations are being accepted until 15th April.
Scarlett revealed that Derwent RAG have also agreed to donate money raised from cake sales towards the Tsunami Relief Fund. There will also be collections at the Feed 1000 event at Vanbrugh on Thursday.
“We're doing as much as we can to offer support to Japanese students at York, as well as those with friends or family in Japan, to raise funds and awareness of the catastrophic events over in Japan” Scarlett said.
The Japanese Society has also played a large part in the fundraising, raising around £800 so far from donations at the Vanbrugh Stalls. They are also hoping to hold a campus-wide fundraiser in cooperation with YUSU RAG.
Their Facebook page, ‘York for Japan’, says “we want to thank you for supporting Japan during this terrible time. We are overwhelmed by the enormous amount of support this page has acquired.”
The Japanese Society plans to make a mass message, with still photographs and short video clips, to send to Japan to show support.
Current overall total is in excess of £3,000 after £1,092 was raised at the Feed 1000 event. Great show from York students, if anyone would like to contribute over the holidays head to http://www.charitygiving.co.uk/yusurag40999
