York Nightline, who offer a confidential listening service held an awareness week this week to promote the service to students. The Yorker spoke to Nightline to discuss how it went.
The organisation, which won the ‘best new initiative award’ at this year’s national Nightline Annual Awards for their expansion into Heslington East, is run by students and offers the chance to “talk to about anything with confidence that [they] will not judge or tell anyone else”.
Nightline told us: “Nightline Awareness week is a project by the national charity Nightline. In this week we aim to promote the service, what it offers and how people can use it.”
As part of the promotion, Nightline held a 36 hour opening, where the service was open during the day as well as night. Nightline told the Yorker “It was really successful, and hopefully people really appreciated being able to access our service while they were around campus in the day.”
The charity have also been using their mascot, Kevin the Cow, to promote the service and he has appeared in photo-shoots with students around campus. They have then been encouraged to add Kevin as a friend on Facebook and tag themselves in the photos, which were uploaded onto Kevin’s profile.
The Yorker asked Nightline whether Kevin would continue to be seen around campus: “Kevin loves it here, and he is definitely sticking around. Expect to see more of him around campus over the next few weeks as he settles in, and maybe a little more dubstep if you're really lucky.”
Nightline have also been running their “first learn-to-listen workshop, in which [Nightline] invited any student who's interested to come and learn about active listening and how they can pick up and use the skills.”
Any student wishing to access Nightline’s service can do so on any night during term time, between 8pm and 8am by telephone on 01904 323735, by email at nightmail@yusu.org, by dropping in to Nightline's flat in Wentworth E Block or by instant messaging Nightline online through http://www.yorknightline.org.uk above or from their Facebook page.
Any student wishing to get involved in Nightline should go to the Nightline website where there is an online form.
