Shoes, glorious shoes

High heel
Power to the heels
Tuesday, 13th December 2011
Earlier we looked at the best party dresses that the high street has to offer. Of course, the shoes are just as important as the dress, and picking the right shoe is an art, as well as a science; high enough for the graces of the occasion, comfortable enough to walk in (and stand awkwardly, possibly for hours, waiting for someone to make the first move towards the buffet), danceable, and wearable with other outfits for another occasion if you’re spending a lot of money on them.

For me, New Look wins for shoes everytime. They are usually well within a student budget, and tend to offer classic styles that can be worn again and again.

For classic black go-with-anything-and-everything shoes, these beauties are great, and their 13cm heel is perfect for anyone looking for extra height (all 5ft of me worships them!). The only problem is the inconvenience of wearing tights with open toe sandals; if you can go bare legged in York in December, you’re a braver person than me!

If you’re looking to add a bit more colour, these purple metallic heels bring the classic court shoe into the 21st century. They’ll liven up a black dress and look great with silver accessories. These maroon satin heels add a splash of festive colour.

To hit the colour-blocking trend, go for these platform courts. I love the green, but for a more conservative look, go for classic black. Topshop have their own version in teal blue, although suede + winter weather=unpleasant smell and an unhappy looking pair of shoes. Nein gut.

If it’s full on Christmas sparkle that you’re after, these open toe gold glitter courts are not for the faint hearted. If gold isn’t your colour, perhaps these sky high silver glitterballs from Topshop will convince you.

To add a touch of Santa to your outfit, Topshop have these seventies style slingbacks. Accesorize with gold rather than silver to avoid people asking where you’ve parked the reindeer.

If you’re not a fan of heels, there’s plenty in the way of flats too. These silver glittery pumps offer a way to get into the Christmas spirit. If you’re looking for something a bit more subtle, these black glittery pumps are perfect for teaming with a range of colours and styles.

If glitter is a no-go for you, try some feminine ballet pumps such as these which have a cute feminine twist.

So there you have it. The minefield that is high street shoe shopping in a nutshell. Happy Christmas!
