A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.

10 ways to feel Christmassy in York this winter...

  • ...donning your Dame outfit

Saturday sees a world-record breaking attempt here in York - the largest gathering of pantomime dames in any one place. It's due to be a sight for sore eyes...and all are welcome to don their dresses to join in!

  • ...going to the pantomime

This year York sees Harold Bishop, Hunter from Gladiators and Simon from CBBC all starring in Cinderella the pantomime at the Grand Opera House. Tickets are just £9 for the opening performances on 1pm and 7pm on Friday 14th December... but careful - he's behind you!

  • ...taking in a Christmas Market

Parliament Street is currently awash with smells of salami, cheese and beer as the German Market's in town.....pop along for some free samples of delicious olives

  • ...supporting Nick Jones

My own personal favourite - spend the last of your disappearing overdraft on downloading Philosophy lecturer, Jones, 'Smells like Christmas Time' and try get him in the Top 40!

  • ...visiting the Christmas Lights...

...in Tang Hall. You may need to take a few friends with you for security but there's no need to go to Blackpool, when we have Tang Hall right on our doorstep. It's currently awash with stunning lights, including trains, reindeer and the customary Santa.

  • ...buying a naked calendar

It was originally the calendar girls, but this year it's all about the Vanbrugh boys. See them in their calendar bearing all for testicular cancer - pick up your copy for just ₤5!

  • ...wrapping your presents

If you don't fancy getting your hands dirty you could go along to Waterstones on Thursday to see Ian Smith, aka Harold Bishop wrapping presents for Alzeimer Research, not only do you get to meet the man himself, but you can get him to wrap your little sister's Harry Potter book. Quality.

  • ...giving to Charity

Student Action are collecting any unwanted foods to donate to a homeless shelter. If you have any unwanted non-perishable foods simply drop them to the SU offices between 12-2 on Friday Week 10 and their elves will do the rest!

  • ...running a mile dressed as Santa

This weekend sees the British Heart Foundation's Santa Jog coming to York, where hundreds of Santa's will run a mile to raise money for children with heart problems. 16th December, starting at Museum Gardens.

  • ...going Ice-skating

'The Ice Factor' returns to York - it was originally set up by a York student and has proved to be one of the best festive attractions in York. Student tickets are ₤6.95 for an hour of undoubted fun.

Are you sure it's £6.95 for an hour as a student? I only paid £5 2 days ago... though it may have been because I was part of a small group.

I think you'd be disappointed if you booked tickets to see them in Sinbad, seeing as the aforementioned actor are starring in Cinderella.

Looks like you got lucky Mitch - the price on production of an NUS card is £6.95. As for the other issue, this has been corrected.
