Tree planted to remember lost student

Saturday, 12th January 2008
A tree was planted on Thursday in the University grounds by friends and family of Rob Davies, a York student who passed away last term.

The tree was planted in the central quad area of the chemistry department, and the ceremony was overseen by Rory Dalgliesh, a university chaplain, who spoke some words of remembrance to people attending.

Some of Rob’s ashes were added with the backfill by Rob’s father, Tony Davies, who spoke a few words about his son.

Many of Rob’s friends turned up to pay a final tribute, and pay their respects to his family.

Joe Butler, one of Rob’s friends said he was glad that the tree had been planted. He said “now there’s somewhere people can come and think about Rob, and remember the good times”

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone involved in organising the tree-planting on Thursday.
It was a lovely gesture, and it was good to see so many people there.
I hope that you can gain some comfort, as we do, that Rob will be remembered in a place where he was so happy.
Best wishes
Tony Davies
