YUSU forced to support cheating students

Essay
YUSU will support cheating students
Thursday, 24th January 2008
Students who bought essays from a UK website will be supported by YUSU until new policy can be drawn up.

Debate was raised as essay-buying students could not only be guilty of plagiarism but possibly also fraud.

The National Union of Students (NUS) said that unions should support their students in cases.

The debate was raised by YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning, who raised the question as to whether students involved in the cheating scandal should be supported by the union.

In most cases of plagiarism students are represented at a misconduct hearing by a YUSU Officer. Their presence is usually to explain any mitigating circumstances which may aid the students appeal to the board.

YUSU Exec, a policy-making body made up of all YUSU Officers, decided there will be a continuation of support until a new policy could be voted on at the upcoming Union General Meeting (UGM).

They also decided that they will support any students’ claims whilst they remain at the University.

The company who sold the essays, UK Essays.com, maintain that they were sold as model answers and not as submittable essays.

The revelation came as part of The Yorker exclusive which last week revealed that 142 students at York had bought essays.

Plagiarism is detected at a departmental level so those who bought essays may never be caught.

The essays came with a £1,000 guarantee that they would never be discovered as plagiarised.

YUSU Exec does not make policy. Policy is made by UGMs (which every student in the university can vote on), interpreted by YUSU Senate (a bigger committee that includes all college chairs) and is implemented by Exec and by individual YUSU officers. What Exec sometimes does end up discussing is how to go about implementing existing policies.
