Arrests made over campus burglaries

Police Van
Saturday, 16th February 2008
University Security Services have caught two males who were trying to break in to campus bedrooms.

The security team conducted an undercover operation, and managed to detain one male on campus, and provided information which led to the arrest of another intruder.

Both are thought to have been involved in a large spate of burglaries on campus since the beginning of 2008.

The intruders were found trying to gain access into Langwith College on Thursday, 7th February.

Items like laptops and cameras tended to be those stolen with the main method of entry through doors that students had left unlocked.

On some occasions students allowed unknown people into their blocks, allowing free entry for the intruders.

One of the intruders has been remanded in custody, whilst the other was released on bail.

YUSU issued statements via York Extra and YUSU News warning students to lock their doors and windows.

Advice to prevent unlawful entry:

YUSU advises students to:

  • Stop anyone from tailgating into accommodation after you
  • Don’t buzz anyone into the blocks
  • Don’t leave your bedroom door unlocked
  • Don’t prop open any doors
  • Don't leave your valuables in view
  • Keep your windows locked

Took a while.

Considering most burglaries don't end in charges being brought, I think this is a pretty good result all round Anon 1.
