Elections shock: Bennett out, Taylor in

YUSU Election
YUSU Elections
Tuesday, 19th February 2008
Ryan Bennett has pulled out of the YUSU presidential race, whilst Dan Taylor has announced he will stand as Services and Finance Officer.

Ryan Bennett, former Vanbrugh chair, has announced he won't run for YUSU President in the upcoming elections, telling The Yorker: "I've been thinking long and hard for quite a few weeks, and have weighed everything up and decided I won't run."

He lists two main reasons, the first being that he wants to leave university on a high: "Everything I've done has been great fun." The second reason is: "I was never that highly political, I was all about organising fun activities for students, the thing that matters."

He admitted that whilst "the SU do a lot of work" he felt that the election campaign was too "smarmy" and he wasn't in it to "make friends with people I don't like, or to go to parties just to show my face. I've decided I don't like that".

Bennett announced he'll be supporting other candidates but said his job in London would be offering him, "something a little bit different".

Dan Taylor, the student involved in the incident which led to Grace Fletcher-Hackwood being no-confidenced, has announced that he will run for Services and Finance Officer.

Taylor said he plans to compete against current Officer, Matt Burton, who he claims is running for an unprecedented second term. "I think that someone should contest Matt Burton in such an important position."

He did however admit that he is "in it to win it, not just to run against him" and is "looking forward to the campaign".

Taylor said he plans to "give him a good run for his money".

Full nominations will be announced on Monday, Week 8.

Myles, I would think he'd defer his third year.

I'm personally more puzzled by how that woman in a sports bra has anything whatsoever to do with YUSU elections. Oh for the day when I don't have to stare at a female model's body while being informed of my chance to exercise my democratic rights.

ps. I see from closer examination that results night will be Gladiator themed - but of course!

Hi Rose,

I think part of the problem is the way that The Yorker have cut the image on the poster.

For fairness, we used two of the well-known Gladiators, Jet and Hunter (one male one female) to make sure we didn't get accused of sexism. The campus media seem to have foiled our plans again.

Hope that clarifies.

I think matt has done an okay job, but I'm not sure why he is sticking around. A new year calls for a fresh start and a new approach.

That said I do not think Dan Taylor has enough experience. Is he even on the JCR?

Shame there is no one else standing.

If you double click on the picture you can see the whole poster...the male model is the small headshot in the bottom right - obviously 'campus media' are entirely to blame for that change of focus, right sam?

Anon.

I to agree that Matt has served his course and some of his work has been positive. I just feel that, as you say, a new year calls for a new approach. One thing that riled me about last year was his frankly empty promise for a campus bar, in town which was never in 1 millions years going to happen.

I am on the JCRC of Derwent and have been seconded by current JCRC treasurer, Jo Frater as well as an ex-treasurer of a campus society. I have support from 2-3 on the YUSU Exec as well calling for a new approach.

I accept concerns with experience, but I genuinly believe that I can offer something better than the status-quo. After all, experience is only gained by experience and I aim to provide the best service possible for York students.

If I diddn't believe I could not win, I would not run. One of the defining factors that swayed me was the fact that Matt Burton was running again and thus-far uncontested. I think 2-terms is staying longer than one should and uncosted positions in YUSU elections, indeed any elections are bad for democracy!

I look forward to an informative and high-class campaign with the common aim of finding and debating matters that will make life better for every student at York.

Matt Burton has done a really good job this year actually, and in my experience he's a really good guy to work with. I'm not sure why he'd want to hang around for another year, but then I'm not sure why anyone would want to run for a sabbatical the first time around anyway.

I'd heard that one of the college treasurers and someone from the New Generation Society were standing for services anyway...

Sam - are campus media also to blame for the banner on YUSU main page only displaying the same woman seen here?

Rose - I agree that the picture used is completely unnecessary. Having said that, I completely missed Gladiators when it was around so I didn't even get the reference until someone explained it to me.

Anne-Marie here and Returning Officer.

I had the poster designed and had significant input.

I chose Jet the gladiator to go on the poster because she was the only hi-res photo of a Gladiator we could find.

Jet is a strong female role model and as such I felt it was acceptable to use her image along with that of Hunter. Who knows, she may even get more females running for election...

We have other versions of the banner going up in the upcoming weeks which include Hunter.

If you have a problem then drop me an email.

Cheers, AMC

Surely as the Yorker is independent, YUSU have no jurisdiction over what is posted on it. Are candidates not allowed free speech?

What happened to the city centre student venue that Burton promised us last year?

I'd be interested to see why he thinks we should re-elect someone that went back on their manifesto.

@#13 - you're correct, YUSU have no jurisdiction over what's posted here. However, posting here may be in violation of election rules, and YUSU do have jurisdiction over their own elections

If Dan Taylor's comment at number 8 isn't a breach of election rules then I don't know what is! He practically lists his policies.

Hi 18, we have addressed this problem by way of a warning. It has indeed been identified as a breach of election rules.

So if Jet was chosen as a role model, was Hunter chosen because he was an 18 year-old guy jacked-up on steroids and having an affair with Ulrika Johnson? :p
