JCRC Chairs: "Give us what you promised"

Alcuin Bridge
The closure of Alcuin Bridge has angered college chairs
Friday, 22nd February 2008
Representatives of seven colleges have contacted the University requesting changes to the facilities provided to York students.

The letter, sent to the University's Director of Facilities Management claims that "there is a clear disparity between what is offered to prospective students and what is provided".

They highlight "the recent closure of two important bridges on campus and reports of the poor state of facilities in residential blocks" as prime examples of the issues. Derwent Chair Oliver Lester also recently produced a video highlighting the plight of his college's students.

They believe that such "repeated failures" have "institutionalised a system whereby students spend time...instigating campaigns against changes that are advertised without notice and not explained to any credible extent".

They also expressed concerned with the lack of communications and go on to request an increase in "both the quantity and quality of information".

The letter was signed by Alcuin Chair Erik O'Connor, Derwent Chair Oliver Lester, Goodricke Chair Joe Clarke, Halifax President David Sharpe, James Chair Chet Khatu, Langwith Chair Zach Pepper and Vanbrugh Chair Matt Oliver.

Is there any reason Wentworth aren't getting involved?

Everyone should watch the Derwent video. In the two year I have been off campus I have forgotten the state of the kitchens in Vanbrugh, Derwent, and Langwith. I really hope the chairs can do something about it.

'changes that are advertised without notice and not explained to any credible extent'

This passage really highlights the situation. It was a whole term before I recieved an email from my college administrator explaining the Vanbrugh/Goodricke bridge closure.

In my first year the facilities people attempted to close vanbrugh wash rooms while the students were away during easter, without informing us, in the hope that no one would protest.

The sooner the University starts treating us like adults and not like student scum the better.
