Students offered anti-criminal paint free of charge

Police arrive
PCSOs offer crime prevention kits
Tuesday, 26th February 2008
Students are urged to protect their belongings with free Smart Water kits.

The kits will be given out by police and community support officers this week in a bid to reduce crime on campus.

They will be available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 2pm - 8pm at the mobile police office which is situated just outside the Student Centre.

Following the recent thefts on campus, students are happy to hear they will be offered extra protection.

One first year living on campus told The Yorker: “I’m glad something is being done about it. It’s not a cure to the problem but at least it’s some form of preventative measure.”

Humberside police have attempted similar crime-reducing strategies in the past, giving out the kits in an attempt to slow the rising crime rates.

The special paint appears to act as a deterrent in most cases, and it is hoped that the University will see similar results from the scheme.

Think how many milk bottles in campus fridges are going to have the Protected By Smart Water sticker on them by the end of the week...

"The special paint appears to act as a deterrent in most cases"

Assuming this ( http://www.smartwater.com/products/propertyMarking.html ) is the product they're talking about, how will it act as a deterrent unless burglars are going round with UV torches?

I think you're supposed to put stickers up as well saying that you're protected by Smart Water...

Hmmm I am skeptical about whether they will actually do anything....
