Societies and Communications

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Matt Harris: Final Year management student, former AU treasurer, Halifax Sports Rep, I've spent this academic year away from student politics, so I can see things from the politicians' side, and that of the rest of the student body.

Rory Shanks: 4th Year MA Post-war Recovery Studies (Politics!), Alcuin JCRC Treasurer & YUSU Ents Officer. Experience: YUSU Ents Officer - Ents Committee (Chair), Union Senate, Union Exec; Alcuin JCRC Treasurer - Finance Committee, Alcuin JCRC, run over ten major events, redesigned Freshers Ball for 2007 and helped launch first ever Viking Raid. Also redesigned Alcuin College logo and have trained over 150 people for ents.

Chaz Taylor: 3rd yr Electronic Engineering with Media Technology BEng, Board of Studies Representative, Former DramaSoc Treasurer, DevSoc Treasurer, Instrumental in 7 Central Hall Events and numerous other society events, across various societies.

1. Why are you running (in five words)

MH: I'm fighting for societies' rights.

RS: Work creatively [&] get things done.

CT: For the sake of every society.

2. If I were to set up a society I would...

MH: be underfunded and under-resourced.

RS: ...wonder how on earth to do certain things. How do I bank? How do I book out a room? How do I run an event? We need better society training!

CT: probably end up being treasurer again and work to get the funding we deserve.

3. I think the best thing I've done at Uni is...

MH: "....getting more funding for sports clubs when I was AU treasurer. Or maybe breaking my leg trying to save college bars from closure."

RS: Without a doubt the coolest thing was doing the Freshers' Ball. The great thing about the ball was that it showed what students can do. We had students DJs, student journalists, student techies, student doorstaff, student bands, student tv producers, student artiste liaisons, student stage managers, student dancers, student jugglers, student bus conductors...That's what being in a university society is all about.

CT: Fame, the Central Hall Musical 2006; being a part of a production that involved 60 people, was seen by over a thousand, and to walk out smiling, was truly an amazing feeling.

Hmmm..... I'm not going to lie, I'm supporting Rory, but I'd really like to see all 3 candidates talk about communications policy and not just societies (where they probably think the votes are coming from).

How about a weekly newsletter, printed on cardboard and distributed on campus with information about EVERYTHING YUSU is doing that week on it? Surely that would be more effective than Daily News??
