A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

The fire started in the second floor kitchen of K Block on Sunday evening, when a toaster left unattended caught fire.
Two students were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, having attempted to deal with the fire themselves. Fortunately, neither was seriously hurt.
Tom Fleming, Director of Health and Safety, has warned that the high level of items awaiting recycling could have helped lead to a much more serious fire.
A “stockpile of flammables” was found in the corner of the kitchen, including many cardboard boxes.
Students have admitted their "laziness" is to blame for this increased safety risk.
Students will now have to take greater care when dealing with recycling, or risk fines from the university.
All campus kitchens are set to be inspected this Wednesday.
Any students whose kitchens are deemed a “fire risk” will have to pay for a specialist team to clean their kitchen.

Was the toaster introduced to the kitchen by students and if so, had it been PAT tested? That's all health and safety need concern themselves with.
Whilst cardboard might exacerbate the fire once it got out of control, it's not going to jump up onto the worktop where the fire is and ignite itself.
Everything's a fire hazard to these people, there's no pleasing them. On a recent inspection of our house for a HMO license by the council's H&S people, we got told a mirror was a hazard because if we had guests in the house and there was a fire at night, they might confuse the mirror for an exit.
The Toaster was in fact in the kitchen when the residents moved in in October and was also PAT tested! Also only 1 student involved was taken to a&e.
I'd love to see the Uni try and fine an entire floor for a messy kitchen... Surely all the reseidents would have to do is deny that the mess was theirs.
Of course the Uni would probably fine the whole floor in which case I'd advise no one to pay as in a similar situation in my first year when a fine was applied everyone denied responsibility and refused to pay. The Uni appeared powerless to do anything about it.
The thing that pisses me off though:
Why does an institution, made up of academics, think it's ok to fine a group of people, when they're unable to apportion blame to a specific person?
I guess the same institution that can't keep bars open on a campus full of students. The same institution that can't keep a convenience shop open on a campus full of students. The same institution that blames a fire started by their supposedly PAT tested toaster on the students who left cardboard near by because somehow they made the mistake of expecting the toaster to not go up in flames...
I have to say when I read this I really do wonder why the University is so quick to blame Students. Surely its the failure of the university to provide appropriate rubbish/recycling removal.
The Uni was happy to mooch off JCRC green reps for so long, maybe its time they actually took some responsibility for removing re-cycling!
PAT [Testing] is an over rated crutch. Like an MOT, it only certifies that something is safe on the day of the test, and given the quality of some of the inspections I've seen, even that's dubious...
In which case better procedures should be introduced for testing their equipment, instead of trying to pass the buck. The university is ultimately responsible for providing unsafe white goods.
