York climbs to 11th in League Table

Central Hall
Thursday, 24th April 2008
York has been ranked 11th in the 2009 League Table by the Good University Guide, a rise of three places.

The university has risen from 14th in the overall League Table published in The Independent today.

The ranking is determined through a combination of factors: student satisfaction, research, entry standards, student/staff ratio, academic services spending, facilities spend, good honours, prospects and completion.

Oxford led the table, beating Cambridge and replacing their rivals in the top spot.

York topped the Yorkshire Universities, with its nearest Yorkshire competitor being Sheffield, which was placed 26th. York's Lancastrian rivals have risen from 19th to 10th.

The University said of the results: "We are pleased by our improvement in the Good University Guide, and we are particularly pleased that many of our departments have achieved top ten positions in the subject league tables including Nursing, Social Policy and Social Work, Psychology, Music, Computer Science, Chemistry, History and Linguistics."

The Top 10:

  1. Oxford (2)
  2. Cambridge (1)
  3. London School of Economics (4)
  4. Imperial College (3)
  5. Warwick (8)
  6. Durham (10)
  7. St Andrews (5)
  8. University College London (6)
  9. SOAS (24)
  10. Lancaster (19)

Subject by Subject Guide (2009 Rank follows subject name)

York made the Top 20 per subject in several subjects.

Looks like facilities spending letting us down again, if you change the weighting so it doesn't count, we move up to 9! (and we all know facilities spending is a rubbish metric, because Hes East is skewing it. Right?)

Lancaster above us?! Does this mean we will be hearing all the traditional calls shouted at them about 2 E's and an HND at roses? Oh the shame...

"Lancastrian rivals, Lancaster"

Was I the only person to be amused by that?

Is there any particular reason the linguistics department doesn't deserve a ranking?
You can't really make that kind of statement without substantiating it.

I would guess linguistics. My linguist friends often complain about the department, including brilliantness such as scheduling an away day to the beach for all the departmental staff on the day essays are due in and the first day of exams, screwing over anyone who needs last minute help...

That said, if York are number 7 for Language and Linguistic Science, think what the other Unis are like?

ah the linguistics department, such an organised bunch. That said, some brilliant teaching.
