Pair to undertake 1,000 mile journey

Two York students are cycling 1,000 miles to raise money for cancer charities.

Article written by Angela Pietz

Tom Rogers and Ben Rackstraw, both finalists at York, will be donning their padded cycling shorts, clip-in shoes and a variety of other cycling gear when they set off from York train station on 27th May to begin their two week long journey from John O'Groats in Scotland to Lands End in Cornwall.

The pair aim to raise £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Care and The Pasque Adult Hospice in Bedfordshire, in thanks for the care they gave to Tom's grandma Sylvia Rogers, who sadly lost her fight against cancer on 2nd April 2008.

Rogers explained that the choice of charities reflected not only the support they'd provided for his grandmother, but the help he'd received personally: "They're charities that don't just look after the people that suffer with terminal illnesses, but also provide support for families."

So far the pair, who are both editors for The Yorker, have raised £614 in cash from donations collected at campus events, but stress that there are plenty of opportunities to donate.

Macmillan donation tins have been placed around York in the Mairis Deli in Heworth, Expressions Vintage shop and the Gillygate Deli.

The money raised will be going all the further, as they are to cover their expenses themselves, allowing 100% of donations to go to charity.

The duo took the opportunity to thank Cross Country Rail, who have provided them with free rail travel, York Bike Rescue, who built their bikes, and the British Cyclists Association. The latter provided pragmatic advice, which has provided the boys with yet another fund raising idea: "They told us that as a health and safety measure cyclists often shave their legs."

This has led to a forthcoming sponsored leg waxing. There are also plans for a raffle, and they have created a sponsorship form for people to use in their workplace.

To find out more about the trip email Tom at tr508@york.ac.uk.

Online donations to Macmillan only can be made at the boys' Just Giving page found here

If you've got an issue with me #2, message me on Facebook (Richard 'Mitch' Mitchell), otherwise, keep the comments relevant to the article?

oooh Mitch, I wonder if the 'anonymous' campaign to be quite rude to you has any links to anonymous' anti-Scientology effort? You don't have links to the 'Church' do you?

(banter. I of course know you have no links to the 'church'.)

I do bear a striking resemblance to a taller, more handsome Tom Cruise, perhaps they've got me confused for someone else...

Refer to #3 - take your childish hatred / wind-up attempt somewhere private or leave it be.

Guys! Please don't trivialise what we are trying to do with this fundraising effort with your childish bitching at each other. Number 2 grow some balls and contact Mitch direct...Mitch don't rise to the bait. And if you decide to grow up then read the article, learn about the charities and maybe think about doing something to help somebody other than your own egos.

great idea and initiative. Now. I have to admit to some inferiority issues. My York-Edinburgh bike ride suddenly seem very much less impressive... /emw

That's a heroic undertaking!
A friend of mine used to cycle from Cardiff to Cambridge overnight but that's a mere 217 miles according to google maps.
Best of luck lads.
