Youth faces court after high speed pursuit

Police arrive
Police followed as men took flight
Thursday, 8th May 2008
A young man has been charged following his involvement in a car chase in York city centre.

The chase began when the driver and his passenger failed to stop their vehicle when asked to do so by police at 11.25pm on Monday night.

A police spokesperson told The Yorker: "One 18-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving and will appear in the York Magistrate Court on 28th May."

The police followed the 18 and 20-year-old males around the city centre at high speed for around ten minutes.

One witness said: "I was on my way home when I saw the car crash at full speed into a lamppost. It was quite scary as we were so close to it!"

The chase came to a stop when the green Rover collided with the metal post close to Clifford's Tower.

"The guy ran off but the police caught up and managed to get him under control."

The vehicle suffered damage but nobody was injured.
