Mystery illness strikes York rowers

Rowing
Rowers plagued by sickness
Friday, 16th May 2008
Twenty squad members have fallen ill in the past two weeks with the exact cause of the symptoms still unidentified.

Members of the rowing crew are suffering from the illness which first hit them two weeks ago. It has spread to all crews, with 20 members being affected.

York Boat Club President Jillian Tongue told The Yorker: “We don't know what the cause is, that's why we are trying to investigate it.”

The Boat Club has contacted British Waterways and York City Council concerning the issue. Both organisations have recognised this as an urgent case and deemed it a priority.

The council has contacted the Health Protection Agency and has since requested stool samples from club members to make a diagnosis.

The main symptoms are vomiting and diarrhoea. However, the illness does not appear to be contagious since none of the members’ housemates have been affected.

Weil's disease, which affects 10% of all freshwater sites, is being considered as one of the potential causes. Another possibility is that the boathouse's tap water supply was infected during the recent floods.

The council has advised that the “River Ouse is not suitable for watersports; however, people may enter at their own peril”.

Crew captains have been asked to change their current route to avoid three treated sewage outlets along the river, in order to avoid aggravating the problem.

The Boat Club is recommending that its members bring their own water bottles to training and put them in plastic bags while on the boats. They have also advised protecting any blisters or cuts, to avoid direct contact with the river water.
