FTR to introduce second trial

Friday, 30th May 2008
A new reduced fare trial will begin on 1st June after students failed to respond to the first promotion.

First York have reintroduced the £2 return fare for a second trial after the previous trial's “bad timing” meant it did not produce a big enough response.

Marketing Manager for First York Charlotte Hudson-Scott acknowledged that the first trial in May had not been as successful as hoped after they failed to organise its promotion alongside YUSU.

First is hoping to “get more on board” next week by acting in conjuncture with the university in their attempts to encourage more students to use the service.

It will remain indefinitely until passenger numbers increase, with no decisions yet made on fare prices.

YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning believes that YUSU have “worked well with First to negotiate such a deal” and said that they have already helped with the advertising.

Canning also hinted “significant improvements to the service” will begin in October, although no details have yet been announced.

The creator of the ‘FTR...Fight the Raise’ Facebook group, Hugh Gilroy, is less encouraged by the news of a second trial. He said: “They’re not telling us what ‘success’ actually is. Even if there’s a 5% or 10% increase they can say it's not enough.”

He praised YUSU for achieving the trials in the first place but suggested that, with regard to actual decisions, First were “putting it off until summer, when there aren’t enough students to complain”.

One first-year student declared: “I don’t have much hope in FTR reducing their fares; these trials just seem to pacify people for a short while.”
