Derwent vote to disaffiliate rejected

Derwent DCUK
Saturday, 31st May 2008
At the recent Derwent open meeting, a motion for a non-binding vote for Derwent disaffiliation from YUSU was defeated, despite support for a debate on the YUSU/JCRC relationship.

The motion, proposed by Alexios Mantzarlis, aimed to spark debate on the issue in the hopes of educating and informing the general Derwent population about what YUSU does for the college.

The motion was defeated, with 2 votes for, 50 against, and 6 abstentions. Some were concerned over the non-binding aspect of the motion, and that a vote would have no effective consequences. Others showed concern over what message a disaffiliation vote might send to the university at large.

Mantzarlis said: “I think it would be useful if there was a substantive debate about what YUSU does and doesn't do, so as to re-connect it to the average student." He also pointed out that it would be useful to find out if there is more YUSU could be doing for JCRCs.

Services and Finance Officer Matt Burton, who attended the meeting alongside YUSU President Anne Marie Canning, told The Yorker: “I don't think there is a disaffiliation argument. The Derwent open meeting was productive and informative in that many things are taken for granted that are provided to JCRCs.”

However, there was a general consensus that a debate on the relationship between YUSU and JCRCs would be a good thing.

Canning and the Derwent JCRC agreed to participate in a panel debate at the next UGM to discuss this issue. Burton commented: “This can only be a good thing.”

Mantzarlis pointed out that the average student is not aware of what YUSU does, especially in terms of JCRCs: "A vote would have meant a debate, and a debate would have meant more information. That’s why I submitted this motion."

This is an entirely misleading headline. No one proposed a motion of 'dissafiliation'. What was proposed by Alexios was a 'vote' on whether Derwent should dissafiliate from YUSU. What people were concerned about however was the fact that any vote would not be binding. Instead, the consensus was that a debate, informative campaigns on the Derwent JCRC website and then a 'survey' to assess people's knowledge/opinion on YUSU-JCR affiliation would be conducted. Pending the outcome of this action, a vote may/may not be conducted at a later date asking Derwent students if they wish to remain affiliated with YUSU, but only after information campaigns, a panel debate, survey and a general debate on the subject matter.

It would be good if some of the innacuracies in this article could be cleared up because the headline is misleading at best.

Just a Point of Information: there were at best 30 people in that Open Meeting, so that vote count is physically impossible..

I'd just like to clarify that the figures used in the above article are taken directly from the Minutes of the meeting sent by the Secretary to our Deputy News Editor so any error, if there is one, does not lie with the News Team.

Thanks

Ruth,
in no way did I want to claim that either you or Antonia made up those figures.

However, whoever sent you them clearly did. Whether they did so to dramatize the failure of the motion, or to pretend that the OM was quorate, I don't know. Either way it's a bit childish..

Hmmm... this vote seems to have been proposed by some of the strongest supporters of Payne for President. Bitter at a pirate victory, perhaps?

#7 what are you on? I know nothing more than the article and the comments and what Alexios has said in the past and i have no reason to believe it has anything to do with our president-elect.(at least i hope it doesnt)

Exactly. I supported this motion and did certainly not support Laura for President. Alexios and I were the only two who voted in favour so where #7's 'logic' comes from is a mystery to me.
