Head injury halts opening performance

Clockwork Orange
Friday, 20th June 2008
Written by Ben Rackstraw

The first performance of A Clockwork Orange by theatre group Belt Up, renowned for their approach to physical theatre, finished prematurely as a lead actor was injured on stage.

During a scene depicting the growing insanity of the play's protagonist the actor threw his head against a brick wall. As they continued to move around the stage, it was only after he said, "I think it's about time someone called me a fucking ambulance", that the play was called to a halt.

Initially the injury was not visible as the actor's face was painted white and the stage was bathed in red light.

Lighting Director Jethro Compton explained that even as the audience were ushered out of the theatre many did not realise that the injury was real: "The audience is moved around so much during the performance that they were waiting outside the theatre, and it was only as the ambulance turned up that they realised he was really hurt."

Remaining conscious at all times, the actor was taken to hospital. It is unclear at this stage whether he will continue in the role for the two remaining performances of the run.

Sounds like a horrible little incident, just imagine explaining that to the nurse is A&E...

All the best though and I hope it's nothing serious!
