Reasons given for no-confidence

James Crest
Friday, 20th June 2008
James JCRC have defended their decision to no-confidence Chair Chet Khatu.

They have issued a revised Press Release to their students, which provides a list of reasons why Khatu faced a no-confidence vote. The JCRC also announced that Vice-Chair Amber Brittain will "temporarily take the position as primary representative and contact for James College JCRC, with the support of the rest of the committee".

"The JCRC followed the James JCR constitution when making the decision, as voted on by James students. The JCRC acknowledge that there are some imperfections in the current constitution and will immediately work to improve the document before presenting it to a James General Meeting next term."

They also announce that they will open the process to all students.

Further details have been released about the meeting that occured on Wednesday 17th June.

"During the JCRC meeting, in line with the constitution, Khatu was asked whether he wished to debate the legitimacy of the no-confidence motion, but declined this opportunity."

The following reasons are then given:

  • Serially undermining the working relationship with college welfare staff, including a lack of attendance at College Council and Zone Resource meetings and a failure to respond to email communication
  • Failure to attend any Freshers' week planning meetings, thus potentially harming the plans for the week
  • A lack of transparency and accountability to the JCRC and college as a whole, including a complete failure to inform or consult the JCRC on important policy decisions
  • Alleged intimidation of JCRC members within committee structures, resulting in committee members feeling unable to perform their duties properly
  • Condoning behaviour such as the 'stripper incident' in James JCR which made college members feel uncomfortable and also conflicted with the welfare aims of the organisation – and misleading the committee over his involvement in such events
  • A lack of support during JCRC run events

Khatu is attempting to find a way to appeal and a Facebook group, 'Get Chet Back- The Campaign For True Democracy', has been set up. A counter-group 'In support of James JCRC' has also been created.

How about including a link to the facebook group set up to support the JCRC? Blatant side-taking from the yorker here.

Whether you like Chet personally or not, the JCRC needs our support.

Hi,

Just to point out that the article was published before I was aware of the counter-group. Now I am, the second link is added.

Thanks!

This was posted on the Campiagn for true democracy facebook group (incidently, there are more members of the support the jcrc group)

There are two things I'm thinking, the first is that I want to address the college and committee together because the main reasons they are giving for my dismissal i.e. attendance is not relevant, none of the other Chairs attend Freshers committee because they oversee wider projects, however I was still involved but that's a different story - second is that if re-instated I want to find a way of making the committee work whilst maintaining the work I do at University level. This might best be achieved by letting Vice-Chairs run the committee and reduce my participation at college level. I think it's ridiculous that James has no Chair, its made a mockery of what I still feel is one of the best colleges.

It would seem that it suits Chet to let the Vice Chairs focus on the small matter of running the JCRC while he tackles much more serious, university-level issues; I wonder if he is really that that determined to take part in I'm a chair get me out of here?

Let me get this straight...he says, "I think it's ridiculous that James has no Chair, its made a mockery of what I still feel is one of the best colleges"; so his solution is "letting Vice-Chairs run the committee and reduce my participation at college level."

The jokes write themselves, really, don't they?

It seems to me that Chet is far more concerned with the bigger, university wide initiatives on the basis that it will look good on his CV. The other college chairs seem to think he's great but obviously he turns up for their meetings as they are of a more important nature than the lowly college community he is supposed to be working for.
I hope the people of James don't vote for him as chair again on the basis of getting sky tv too, as there is clearly an issue here with the running of the JCRC and as far as im concerned if Chet has managed to provoke the rest of his college committee enough to carry a vote of no confidence then he can't be doing a very good job.

Taken from the 'Bring back Chet - the campaign for true democracy' Facebook group.

There have been reports of a Facebook group planning to "Go get 'em" at the next JCRC meeting. Exactly what the plan entailed has not been made clear but i would like to state explicitly that I personally, and as the creator of this group DO NOT condone any threats of violence against the JCRC or any member of the college. Whether or not the membership of the more recent group has an overlap with this one is irrelevant.

It is of course worth pointing out that the admins of the group (including Chet) have condemned any form of intimidation, however I think it speaks volumes that this is even an issue

#6 - On the subject of the Sky TV, how is James College intending to pay the £3000 per year fees that will kick in after 2 years? Chet doesn't seem particularly innocent in terms of making decisions without wide consultations there.

"The JCRC acknowledge that there are some imperfections in the current constitution and will immediately work to improve the document before presenting it to a James General Meeting next term" - a little strange to want to change the exact thing they used to vote him out.

An admittance that it is flawed is rather amusing when considered on those terms as the JCRC seem to not want any future members to have the same rights as themselves on votes of no confidence. Perhaps an acknowledgement of it not being the right way to go about it?

I'm not quite sure what your point is #9 - they themselves have admitted that the constitution is imperfect, but it was the only tool that they had at their disposal. It's fairly obvious why they want to change it, because it's the constitution that's brought them the majority of the controversy...

Reply to post #8:
With regards to the sky tv, i had it on good authority that the committee, whose responsibility it was to look after the college budget, were never informed of the aquiring of Sky TV, a perfect example of how Chet has undermined the committee and college. this is one of the may reasons his position was deemed untenable. As you rightly point out, its expensive to keep it running so it was imperative that the committee were informed, but as i said they were not.
And just incase you think I'm an insider, spreading rumor, I'm not, I'm from Derwent.
