Police incidents rise in Welcome Week

Micklegate Landscape

Friday, 24th October 2008
The City of York saw a 12.5% rise in police incidents during Welcome Week.

Only 168 incidents were logged for the Guildhall and Micklegate area in Week 0 of the University of York's academic term, but this rose to 192 incidents in Week 1, Welcome Week.

The statistics cannot identify a specific number of situations involving students or alcohol consumption.

Nonetheless, the Guildhall and Micklegate area is a popular evening destination for students, throughout the year but especially during the first week of the term.

Micklegate and the surrounding area are home to two of York's main nightclubs, Ziggy's and Tru.

Both clubs were used on several bar crawls and nights out run by university colleges during Welcome Week.

Halifax Student Association President David Sharp, who was involved in Halifax's STYC Night, said, "I was out almost every night in Freshers' Week and I certainly didn't notice any difference. I don't think it's a particularly threatening area."

Other students, however, have expressed worry about the alcohol fueled violence in the city centre.

One second-year told The Yorker: "I'd hate to live around Micklegate! There's so many loud students around there every night and I've seen a few fights starting just in the last week."

Incidents are classed as situations in which police decide to respond with lights.
