Students to see budgets cut
Wednesday, 29th October 2008
Budget miscalculations have put thousands of students at risk of grant cuts and will limit new university places.

As reported in The Guardian, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, which is responsible for Further Education grants, has a current shortfall of £100m.

Students face potential reductions in current and future funding, a move that would directly contradict government policy to expand the university system and increase its number of applicants.

The department is being accused of failing to effectively plan and budget the increase in student grants that were promised in July 2007.

The most recent changes offered the maximum amount of grant to students from families with incomes up to £25,000. The previous upper limit was £17,500.

Second-year student Catherine Smith said: “These cuts are worrying, especially when you consider the rising cost of accommodation, food, electricity, gas and other course related costs. Students who receive grants don’t always have further sources of funding available to them.”

A dramatic rise in university applications is another contributing factor to strains on the government’s financing of students.

There has been a 10.5% increase in students beginning their studies this year .

Universities will now have to consider limiting student places in what The Guardian describes as a “short-term freeze to claw back some of the spending”.
