Heslington Road to close for repairs

Ftr
Bus service to be diverted
Thursday, 30th October 2008
Written by Bass Jundi

Heslington Road, the main link between campus and the city centre, will be closed for two weeks while repairs are carried out.

The roadworks will begin Monday, 3rd November. York City Council are closing the road between 9.15am and 4pm, Monday-Friday, even though other roadworks around the city are taking place solely during off-peak periods.

Heslington Road is a common route to campus for many students, and the area includes popular student takeouts such as Efes. A large amount of students also live along Heslington Road, and on the side streets around it.

The number 4 bus, the main bus service between campus and the city centre, runs along the road. While repairs are being performed, the service will be diverted.

The road is also home to Fairfax House, a major undergraduate off-campus residence, home to nearly 100 first-year Vanbrugh students.

Cars will be denied access and it is not yet clear whether cyclists will be allowed to pass. Information released by York City Council suggests that cyclists will have to dismount and wheel their bicycles along the pavement.

While the roadworks are in place, traffic is likely to spill onto Green Dykes Lane-University Road, a main route from the University to the residential areas of York that already sees major traffic jams during the afternoon rush hour.

One first-year living at Fairfax House said: “When I'm in a rush and need to cycle or take the bus, or friends visit me from further away, it's going to be a pain.”
