University discusses renewable energy

Officials from The University of York have held talks with the city’s council Chief to discuss renewable energy on the Heslington East site.

Elizabeth Heaps, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Estates and Strategic Projects, met Councillor Andrew Waller on Wednesday. Waller wanted to see an overall green energy strategy for the planned development.

Last month, a council planning committee refused to back the plan for the Theatre, Film and Television Building. Councillors were not convinced that ten percent of the building’s energy would come from renewable sources.

The committee criticised the university, citing a lack of progress on environmental issues.

Councillor Waller said he was assured at the meeting “that by the end of the month, there will be a clear indication to the planning committee and the city as to how the university will achieve the target of ten percent”.

He added: “They went to great lengths to explain how the buildings themselves would be built, with high levels of insulation and energy efficiency, and how, in the long term, they are looking to make the whole campus more energy efficient.”

Robyn Heather, chair of the university's People & Planet society, welcomed the decision. She said: "It's fantastic that the city are putting pressure on the university, hopefully it'll mean they'll listen to them, even if they don't listen to their own students with regards to energy on the new campus site."

Last month, the university agreed to rethink the route linking Heslington East to the current campus after complaints from Heslington residents.
