Trustee board elections caused constitutional problems

YUSU
Saturday, 29th November 2008
YUSU elections for the trustee's board revealed potential conflict of interest problems regarding the position of student trustees. Constitutional changes have had to be made.

The issue was raised at Union Council where some pointed out the potential problem of the newly elected trustees holding positions in YUSU committees. YUSU Societies and Communications Officer Rory Shanks said: "The trustee board should really be as independent as possible."

In a Union Council vote, it was decided trustees may no longer sit on any YUSU committees or the Union Council itself. The council also decided to implement this decision retroactively, meaning any current trustees who also sit on YUSU committees will have to choose between the two positions.

When the decision was made, some questioned whether this would make the trustee positions harder to fill. It was felt that the students who would be interested in the position were probably interested in YUSU in general and would most likely hold YUSU committee positions.

Questions were also raised at how those changes were made. Jason Rose, a current student trustee who also holds committee positions, said: "I was never in favour of allowing trustees to have the level of affiliation to YUSU that I have currently."

He added: "The YUSU trustee board is a very important part of the Student Union and all constitutional amendments to it should be properly thought out, planned, discussed and reviewed before even brought to YUSU Council. It hasn't."

Another problem is that college chairs could potentially also be student trustees, provided their vice chairs vote for them in council.

Shanks said: “In theory it could be possible that college chairs could defer their Union Council vote to a vice chair, but that really is a loophole. We wouldn’t encourage that, there is no precedent for that. I guess if that were to happen, we’d readdress that.”

Rose claimed this was a consequence of the council not having taken the time to properly plan out the amendment. He said: "Instead of thinking the issue through they have decided to rush through a vote on a motion that was penned by Matt Burton in seconds."

Just to clarify, the decision made at Council needs to be ratified by both the Trustee Board and a 2/3 vote in favour at a UGM. Tom

"If I'm not allowed to be a trustee and a Councillor I'm going to for fucking everything :p...I can still go to --OPEN-- Council... I just can't vote. Which is fair and means I can still wander around for no reason :p "

What? So why did you stand for four positions then? If your second statement is true, why didn't you raise the issue before the elections? Or why didn't you not stand, and submit a properly thought out and planned proposal for discussion.

I know absolutely nothing about this issue so I will just be linguistically pedantic.

Jason. I imagine you were trying to say "hypocritic".

You would be wrong anyway; no such word exists.

It's either "hypocritical" or "a hypocrite".

"Hypocratic" could only mean two things; that you're either misspelling "Hippocratic", in some way referring to the famous medical oath, or that you're speaking ancient greek and you're describing the process of trying to hold on to a horse (ίππος + κρατώ). Or perhaps, depending on the interpretation, a system of political administration where the central power is exercised primarily by the aforementioned domesticated solid-hoofed herbivorous quadrupeds.

Presumably, that was not the kind of message you were trying to get across.

So now this issue has been resolved, I can finally get some sleep.
