Student Action Week to be cancelled

Wednesday, 3rd December 2008
Student Action Chair Adam Wiles has announced that Student Action will no longer run a Student Action Week.

Replacing the usual week-long activities will be a number of large events spread out across the academic year.

Wiles explained: "The decision was made in order to maximise the effectiveness of recruiting volunteers and get even more people involved within Student Action."

Next year Student Action will aim to attract more student volunteers closer to the start of term.

Wiles said: "The majority of external volunteer organisations actively recruit during September and October, so it naturally makes more sense to organise a volunteering fair nearer the start of term."

Wiles said that in order to meet such requirements, "it is necessary to promote the group close to the start of term".

He added that it would be "foolish" to attempt a Student Action Week earlier in the term as too much already happens in those opening weeks.

The decision was made after this year’s Student Action Week, which took place in Week 6 of this term. The week celebrated Student Action’s 40th birthday, with events including a bingo night hosted by Mad Cap’n Tom Scott.

Wiles told The Yorker that the success of this year’s Student Action Week had not affected his decision. He said: “It must be highlighted that this year’s Student Action Week was the most well attended in the group's recent history, and has certainly encouraged more students to get involved in volunteering.

"The Lamel Beeches project alone managed to recruit ten amazingly enthusiastic volunteers as a consequence of the volunteering fair. In short the change was made irrespective of the week's popularity."
