Know your Chairs: elections round up

Night campus
Thursday, 18th December 2008
The Yorker brings you the results of all seven JCRC elections.
  • Alcuin

A total of 394 people voted in this year’s Alcuin elections. In a very close Chair election, Oliver Hutchings beat Sam Daniels by 15 votes.

Hutchings paid tribute to his opponent, saying: "Alcuin College has a whole lot of walking left to do and in losing Sam Daniels the college has lost a good portion of a leg. It's going to be a hell of a lot harder to limp our way through the next year without him, but I'm certain that we can do it."

Hutchings added: "I've got a good committed JCRC to work with and a great foundation laid by last year’s JCRC, I'd actively have to work hard to mess up."

Katherine Turner was elected as Vice Chair for Welfare and Support, and Thomas Gibby was elected as Business and Services Vice Chair.

Turner, who was Female Welfare Officer this year, said: "I’d say firstly how excited I am to be given the opportunity to take Alcuin on in its current position; the last JCRC really established Alcuin as a strong college to be reckoned with."

Gibby beat Suzi Ellis by 60 votes, but said he felt that margin "doesn’t do justice to the calibre of my opposition". He added that his victory "means a lot".

  • Derwent

Former Bar Rep Joe Rankin was elected as Chair. He said: "I'm really very proud to have been elected Derwent Chair. It's a serious position to hold and I look forward to working with the new JCRC Reps, the college and members of the university's departments to bring about the great ideas and aims that people set when they stood in the elections."

Another current JCRC member was elected as Vice Chair – Anna Claire Younger, who was RAG Rep this year.

  • Goodricke

In a very close election for Goodricke Chair, Dan Walker beat Philip Lee-Wright by three votes. Walker, who had been a Bar Rep, thanked everyone who voted.

He added: “Every single vote mattered! Your new JCRC will be working relentlessly to provide an absolutely amazing year!”

Jim Clark and Zoe Stones, both of whom are members of the RAG Committee, were elected as Vice Chairs. Clark and Stones said they were "both delighted to have been elected in such a hotly contested position and are thrilled about the coming year".

However, they did express disappointment at the number of positions which will not be filled. They said: “It was disappointing to see so many positions on the Goodricke JCRC go unfilled. This will hopefully be resolved by by-elections held next term.”

  • Halifax

In the HCSA elections, Roberto Powell was elected President. Powell, who ran unopposed, said: “I'm really pleased to be given the opportunity to be Halifax President and I am committed to improving student welfare within the college.”

Nick Synnott and Phil Walker were elected as Vice-Presidents. Phil Walker told The Yorker: "Nick and I are delighted with our election as Vice-Presidents, our main aim this year will be to restore a sense of unity and pride in Halifax College which seems to have been lost to some extent.”

This "lack of unity and pride" was reflected by a low number of candidates running in this year’s HCSA elections, with half of the positions unfilled and most of the candidates standing unopposed.

  • James

In James, Amber Brittain was elected Chair. Though running unopposed, Brittain only won by thirty votes. 62 people voted to RON. Brittain had been Services Vice-Chair, and when a vote of no confidence was issued against Chet Khatu the three Vice-Chairs shared the responsibility of Chair.

Catherine Kerry was elected Welfare Vice-Chair. Kerry had run unopposed. The positions of Services Vice-Chair and Student Development Vice-Chair were not contested for.

  • Langwith

This year’s Langwith JCRC elections saw the highest voting turnout in Langwith’s history. Sam Asfahani was elected Chair, beating off competition from Phil Mason and Simon Wood by a comfortable majority.

Asfahani said: "I’m extremely delighted to have won the election against two great candidates and close friends. I’ll be looking to get more and more people involved around Langwith and ensure that the YUSU bar remembers the college it’s been put in."

In a much more closely contested election for Vice-Chair, Maxine Wilkins and Kelly Briggs defeated Matthew Freckelton and James Dorward by 12 votes.

Regarding their victory, Briggs said: “Maxine and myself would just like to say that we're really happy about getting the position. It was really close and we're so thankful to all those who voted for us, and to Matt and James for the great competition.”

  • Vanbrugh

In a closely contested election for college chair, Danielle Fill won by 25 votes. When asked about her victory, she said: “The whole thing has tested me in so many ways! It's been scary, exciting and challenging but all worthwhile as I know I will put in all the work to make sure Vanbrugh stays the best! I just want to thank all the 230 people that voted for me!”

Laura Bo and Martin Mulligan were elected as Vice-Chairs. Mulligan said he felt “privileged” to have been elected. He added: “I can't wait to start putting all my ideas into motion. I've got a feeling that this will be Vanbrugh's best year yet!”

Bo added that she was “very thankful to everyone who supported me and trusted me with their vote” and promised that “the whole committee will be working hard to continue the good work of the current committee”.
