Friday, 23rd January 2009
Written by Claire Curtis

The York Union Debating Society is hosting the university’s first ever Inter-Varsity Debating Competition this weekend.

York’s Debating Society attends inter-varsity competitions at universities across the country on most weekends, and has just recently returned from the World Universities Debating Championships in Ireland.

Now the society is hosting its own tournament in York, which will involve teams from universities across the UK. There are about 25-30 universities participating, including Cambridge, St. Andrews, Warwick and Manchester.

The Chief Adjudicator for the prestigious event will be the current English National Debating Champion and Best Speaker at Worlds 2009.

The final is open to anyone to come and watch, and will feature some of the best debaters in England. The motion for the final will be announced at 6.30pm on Saturday 24th January, with the final scheduled to start at around 7pm in Alcuin East Wing (room to be confirmed).

There will also be a recording of the final debate which will be uploaded as a podcast on The Yorker website.
